This is the cheapest of the Philips range of Blu-Ray players, but it is also BDP 2.0, so you access the latest special features via the internet (as well as update the firmware) through an ethernet cable (remember to buy one). Be aware that you do need to put at least a 1GB memory stick in the back to access these features, as unlike more expensive models it does not have any memory built in. However, if you are like me and are more concerned with the playback of blu-ray movies. The picture quality is excellent and the remote control and menus clear and simple to use. The number of outputs for audio and video is excellent linking easily via HDMI to my TV and through a digial coaxial lead to my cinema system. This is where its important to note that there is no optical output on this model.
Playback is clear and once loaded (which takes a few questions) playback is smooth, although have to wear my glasses to fully appreciate the HD effect (that says more about my eye sight that this player). The remote control is simple and easy to use for even the less technology friendly out there. When you press play/pause etc... then a large symbol appears in the middle of the screen with dramatic effect. Always handy when you accidentially sit on the remote and you're wondering what is going on with the TV.
Standard DVDs run smoothly with some noticeable improvement thanks to upscaling, but no more than you would get with a normal upscaling capable DVD player.
As seems to be standard with Blu-Ray players, there is no HDMI or ethernet lead included. So there are a few extra expenses to be incurred to get the most from this player.
When I decided to buy this player I was torn between similarly priced Sony players, but be careful as these are often not 2.0 and are older models, whereas Philips released theirs in May 2009. Whichever Blu-Ray player you do decide to buy, remember to opt for 1.1 or 2.0 and is able to receive firmware updates to ensure it will continue to play blu-ray discs in the coming years.
Overall, I am very happy with this player, which looks nice, works well and packs a lot of connectivity considering the price and the competition. An underrated competitor that is really worth considering.
