Philips DVDR 3380 DVD Recorder

Advantages: Simple to use and good functionality.
Disadvantages: Startup is a little slow.

Just like the other user, I too had this issue with the recording problem with Philips brand 4x+RW discs. Having had some prior experience with PC drives, I logged onto the Philips website (search for 'P4C' ) and burned the firmware update for this recorder onto a CDRW. After updating the set, it was able to record onto the philips discs! It also seems to be able to record on most minus format discs and a few +RDL discs. Video and audio quality is OK. Build quality is OK. Remote is uncluttered but the multifunction buttons (FFWD is long-press of chp fwd) needs getting used to. The main gripe I have is the long start up time but it seems that all recorders have this issue. HDD-based recorders, it seems, can have even longer startup times depending on the number of titles in the HDD! Why can't DVD recorders be like their ...

Philips DVDR 3300H

Advantages: Hard Disk recording, time shifting, 8hr recording on dvdr, firewire input
Disadvantages: can't record directly to dvdr, 5min chapters, can't adjust timeshift buffer

live tv, not holding your recording until the ads are finished. You can wait until the programme is finished and edit the ads with the edit function. All recordings are presented in a menu much like a dvd for easy access however you cannot enter a time from within the recording to start playing. You cannot resume from the same point of a previous viewing unless you update the firmware first from the Philips website. You will have to play it from the beginning or select chapters. The chapters are automatically inserted at 5 min intervals, again a feature which cannot be adjusted but only turned off completely. From the same menu you can Name recordings, delete or protect them from deletion and transfer them to a dvdr/rw. The dvdr 3300h accepts the +/- r/rw formats and also +r DL. You can select various recording qualities from HQ (high ...

Philips DVDR890- The cream of the crop

Advantages: Wide Range of Compatible formats, Good quality recordings, good size, value for money, easy set-up
Disadvantages: Occasional flat audio, Manual is very confusing (just worked it out myself)

* Initial Note * At last, we can now record our favorite programs on to DVD. Slowly and surely VHS is becoming the old BETA MAX, and before you know it we will no longer see viedos in the shops. DVDs are surely, taking over. DVD Recorders are surely a step in the right direction -moving away from the drone, and irritating dull quality that we have been used to for the past 20 years. The Philips DVDR890 is just one of these new innovations, and as I have experienced, is one of the better ones on the market at the moment, reasonably priced to as low as £480. So why is it a good buy? *Features* When I first purchased the DVD recorder just after christmas in 2003, I realised that it was very simple to install. Once you had plugged in all of the input leads from your different appliances, (and obviously gave it a power ...
