The philips DVD player does not only have one connection. Like any other DVD player it also have a Scart connection, which enables you to connect it to any other T.V (including standard T.Vs). The scart lead is not included in the box.

When I moved to University I thought it would be a good idea to buy a new T.V and DVD player. As technology is moving fast I decided to buy this Philips DVP3980 DVD player for £49.99 From Currys.
What is so special about this DVD player? Well apart from being cheap, this Philips DVD player has an HDMI connection on its back, which enables the DVD player to upscale the resolution to a real 1080p high definition (HD).
The TV I bought had 720p, therefore the DVD player up scales to 720p when connected with an HDMI cable. The picture quality is very impressive and rather clear compared to standard TV. The DVD player is black in colour (which is the new colour in technology), stylish and very light (only weighs 2.5kg).

The philips DVD player does not only have one connection. Like any other DVD player it also have a Scart connection, which enables you to connect it to any other T.V (including standard T.Vs). The scart lead is not included in the box.
The DVD player also has a component cable output (a cable with three colours on the end normally green, red and blue). This allows you to connect the DVD player to your TV if it has a component output.
It also has an audio output which can be used to connect to the surround sound speakers or any other types of speakers. Another way you can connect to speakers is via the coaxial output. I don't really use any of the audio outputs because my TV has enough volume for one room.

The DVD player plays many types of DVDs and Cds including CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, picture CD, MP3-CD, DVD+R etc. It also views pictures in HD format, which I think is a bonus. A drawback on this DVD player is that it only has four buttons on it, and these buttons does not include the 'skip and backward' button. This suggests that if you lose the remote control and you are watching a DVD or playing a CD you can not skip to the next song, because it can only be done by the remote.
However, the buttons on the DVD player are rather wide and easy to press, they are also clearly labelled.
The remote control is, light, black in colour looks rather nice and does not look too complicated like other DVD remotes which I have come across. The buttons on the remote control are rather big, soft to the touch and clearly labelled, making it easier to use. The remote control requires 2 x AAA batteries which are included in the box.

The DVD player has a digital LCD screen which shows the track of song you are listening to and how far the movie has gone. This feature is rather useful, especially when I am listening to a CD via the dvd player.
The dvd player can only hold one CD or dvd disk at a time. This does not bother me at all really. When playing dvd's or Cds it does not take long to load them at all, comparing to the other DVD players which I have owned, it is probably the fastest when it comes to loading.
Another thing I like about the DVD player is that it allows you to zoom into movies so that you wont have any black bars above or below the screen which does annoy me sometimes.

Apart from the missing buttons on the dvd player e.g. skipping to the next chapter, rewind etc. I definitely recommend this DVD player, as it's the cheapest of its kind, it's very light and has all the high-tech connection. If you have an HD 1080p TV and are looking for a cheap real high definition(1080p) DVD player than can upscale to 1080p then this dvd player is for you.
For those who are not into technology, this dvd player comes with a manual, which is rather useful. Setting it up is rather easy though, all you have to do is chose your preffered connection, e.g. scart lead, HDMI cable etc and plug it into the dvd player and the back of your TV and off you go (of course you have to plug the mains as well).

---The DVD player has a two region code therefore allows DivX Playback and other DVDs across Europe, Ireland, including Japan, South Africa etc.
---It has a twelve months manufacture guarantee, this does not cover accidental damage. Currys did offer me an extended warranty for 3years for only £9.99 but didn't take it out as it was going to go over my budget.
---Does not play blu-ray dvds and does not record DVDs.
---This Dvd player can be bought in other electrical shops. I've actually seen It on amazon cheaper but did not have the patience for it to be delivered.
---Has parental control (for those parents who likes to be in control of what the children watch)
