...over time. I phoned Philips for advice - they confirmed that no descaling should be necessary...but tell that to the dirty brown sludge that spat out every time I tried to iron something.
So, ultimately, the iron got louder and louder (a downside of steam generators) and the performance got worse and worse, until finally, I just couldn't put up with the dripping heap of rubbish any more!
I have owned this steam generator for 18 months and have just put it out with the rubbish this week.
Brilliant when new - better than any other iron I have owned. However, I would expect it to last for longer than 18 months, particularly as it wasn't cheap.
5 months ago, the water tank began to leak....drip drip drip, constantly. Phoned Phillips to buy a replacement and was quoted £40+....but, I asked "this product is barely out of guarantee, surely you can do something to help?". Nope, apparently not. It was expensive in the first place, so I certainly didn't want to spend a further load of money on it. Therefore, every time I've used the iron, I have to remove the water tank and stand it in the sink until next time! Hardly practical.
Despite regular cleaning (the manual does not recommend that it will need to be descaled) the performance of the iron deteriorated slowly but surely over time. I phoned Philips for advice - they confirmed that no descaling should be necessary...but tell that to the dirty brown sludge that spat out every time I tried to iron something.

I stress that it was fab when new, but it's lack of durability, combined with atrocious service from Philips has meant that I am not sorry to see the back of it.
Advantages: Steam Disadvantages: Size, performance and features
My experience of this type of steam machine is mostly negative. This iron has several disadvantages: firstly it is big and bulky, think about where you will store it and if you have to move it to do your ironing. I have not found an advantage for having so much steam, it may last longer if you are constantly using the steam setting, but it doesn't iron any better. In fact I think its overall performance is not as good as a standard steam iron. Finally ...

Advantages: great Disadvantages: bit heavy - but that is what you are buying
I have to disagree with the person who was very negative about this 'iron', I can only say you simply do not iron! I have been ironing for 30 years and this is by far the best I have ever used and will continue to use, walks all over my previous normal steam irons, and it is going to be larger as it is a steam generator not an iron!! So please do not be put off by this persons neg obviously has never really done much ironing?? I have a family of ...

Advantages: Shiny uncreased clothes in about half the time. Disadvantages: Slightly noisy when the water is heating up
of pressure (3.5 bars) on wrinkles, straightening them in no time. There are several models of this iron available in the market: PhilipsGC7230, PhilipsGC8220, PhilipsGC8261 and PhilipsGC9040. All of these products work on the same principle. However, differences lie in the water tank capacity, steam pressure, continuous steam capability and last but not the least, the price (ranging from 75.00 to 250 ponuds). The higher the steam pressure better is the action on stubborn creases.
Overall, I love this iron and recommend it to everyone. Here are some of the positives and negatives.
Positives:
1. Shiny uncreased clothes in about half the time.
2. Easy to use.
3. Lightweight as the water is stored in a separate as compared normal iron.
4. It comes with a calc clean function which is easy to use and prevents scaling, which is ...
