I have tried many of the hair removal ideas out there, from shaving to creams to actually removing the hairs themselves.
For many years I have used immac hot wax, but was fed up of the constant mess, and leaky tubs, so my thoughtful fiance (now ex-fiance) brought me an epilator for my birthday!!!
*** What exactly is an Epilator *** The word epilate simply means "remove hair"
Where as a shaver cuts the hair off, an epilator actually removes it using the row of tweezers it has instead of a blade which pull the hairs completely out (ouch I hear you say!!)
*** Presentation / Packaging *** The epilator comes with a nice handy white bag to keep it in, along with a little brush to clean it, the epilator itself and the attachment (I can't think of another word to describe it).
The epilator is ergonomically designed to fit into your hand with ease, making it easier to get to those more difficult to reach places!
What makes this epilator different to other epilators is the attachment. The only way I can describe this, is that it has a waxy feel, looks like the mouse you use on your computer, with a silver plate on it. The idea is that you put this attachment into the freezer (it comes with a storage container for hygeine reasons). Then when you use the epilator this attachment clips to the bottom, and the silver plate runs along the skin cooling it, opening the pores, making it less painful! when the tweezers go into action.
*** How to use *** 1) You simply plug it in! (the plug is very heavy on this. The chord is actually quite long, but I still find I sit right on top of the plug socket. I still wish it was cordless, I would probably use it much more, and would be better to take on holiday (I can guarantee I always find a few I missed).
2) Remove the plastic cap which protects the blades (tweezers)
3) Attach the frozen "mouse" from the freezer. There is a plastic sleeve that you insert the mouse into, before attaching it. I spent hours the first few times trying to work out why it wouldn't fit to the epilator, until I realised I had forgot to put it in the sleeve. You dont have to use it with the attachment, I dont actually bother any more to freeze this little devil, or attach it, the epilator still works without it, for those of you who are a little braver.
4) There are two settings on the epilator, one for normal areas, and the second setting for more sensitive areas, too be honest I dont actually notice the difference, pain is pain after all!!! I just use the higher setting all the time.
5) Hey presto, you then sit there and epilate away with one hand, whilst wiping tears from your face with the other!!
6) Once finished, just remove the attachment, clean the head, put the cap back on, unplug, and put back in its handy storage bag!!
I have had my epilator for almost 3 years now, and this may sound weird, but I actually dont feel the pain on my legs any more, although it still hurts when I do under my arms.
IN my opinion, I believe that epilating is a much better method than shaving (I have never been keen on shaving), and much less time consuming than waxing (not to mention less messier).
*** Advantages *** Longer laster smooth legs (about 5-6 weeks) Quick and easy No costly razors, lotions or waxes once initial cost has been paid Not as messy No shaving lotions needed No cuts (well I haven't)
*** Disadvantages *** Should be cordless Painful Can lead to ingrowing hairs
***Top Tips*** Don't use on areas which are sore Don't use after a hot bath or shower (the skin is more sensitive then) To clean the head, use a baby wipe Make sure you moisterise well after use
*** Cost *** Initial cost may be expensive as these things cost around £40 - £50, but there are no ongoing costs like, disposable razors, shaving lotions, or if you are used to waxing, a pot of wax and strips costs around £8, within a year the epilator has paid for itself.
***Recommendation*** If you don't like pain then this is definately not for you, if you currently use another hair removal method like waxing, I would highly recommend this instead.
Advantages: virtually pain-free on not too sensitive areas, nice design Disadvantages: a bit tricky to use at first, still painful on sensitive areas, plug and cord cannot be removed
...the other one was the Philips Satin Ice 2 in 1.
He was not desperately trying to tell me something, as I already had one of these 'electric pluckers' as he calls them, I have had 2 since I started needing to get rid of those unwanted hairs. And I had been using it regularly, once a week. He just heard me moan that my old (5 years old) epilator was overheating, and I was considering buying one of these 'new generation' epilators myself.
I had heard ... ...about guarantee, advertisement about other Philips Beauty products, and a pouch in which to store everything neatly.
The instruction manual is full of useful tips and clear explanations (with drawings) as well as warnings.
I read the said manual, and discovered that I would have to wait 6 hours before I could try my brand new toy, as the cooling system in its cassette has got to be left in the freezer for that amount of time before it can be used ...

Advantages: No hair for weeks, hurts less than other epilators Disadvantages: Still painful
I received my Satin Ice for christmas (perhaps somebody was trying to tell me something). It is revonutionally in the fact the epilator cools your skin before it rips the hairs out from the root. This is meant to make the process less painful.
What you get for £50.00 (from boots December 2000):
~ Epilator
~ Skin cooler
~ Freezer cassette
~ Protective cover
~ Carry case
~ Instruction manual
~ Cleaning brush
~ Head for shaving
The actual ... ...appliance with three-pin plug. Both snap together and fit your hand perfectly. The skin cooler is the unique feature of this epilator. It is an oval piece of plastic with metal at the bottom, which when placed on your skin cools it down enough to make the whole process a lot less painful. Inside the plastic is a liquid, when placed in the freezer inside the cassette for about 2 hours it becomes solid. You can then take it out of the freezer, remove ...

Advantages: Effective, slow regrowth Disadvantages: painful to begin with
...decided to opt for the Philips Satin Ice Epilator. This model appealled to me because it has a detachable cooler which is supposed to numb the skin and being a bit of a scaredy cat, it sounded less painful. You must put the cooler in the freezer two hours before you intend to use it, however, you can store it in the freezer so it is always ready to use. Also, with this model Philips offer a "three month money back 'no pain' guarantee" which I think ... ...How lucky is that?
Philips offer a money back 'no-pain' guarantee but stress that you need to perservere with it for three months. I did find it painful at first but now I don't bat an eyelid. It's something you can live with and, in my opinion, it really is the best option to help you have smooth and silky stubble free legs. For this reason, I would highly recommend it and won't be claiming my money back.
I paid £36.00 for the Philips Satin Ice ...

Advantages: hairfree sort of Disadvantages: it hurts like hell
Why do women do this to themselves? There's no way a man would consider having a large noisy set of mechanised tweezers rolled over their legs.
I don't know why I invested £55 in this. It seemed like such a good idea at the time. I'm not a particularly hairy person, so I didn't think it would be too painful. How wrong can one person be?!
But I did. for some reason. Advantages: Long lasting effect, only buy once Disadvantages: Pain, somewhat time consuming
In my search for long lasting, smooth and non-hairy pins, I have tried probably every method known of hair removal, from shaving to waxing and sugaring. Still not 100% happy with any of the afore mentioned torturing procedures, I bought a Satin Ice Epilator from my Littlewoods catalogue. I choose this brand because it was on offer at the time! (costing me £35.99 instead of the usual £45.99) and also because the Satin Ice epilator claimed to have ... ...Includes in the box, you get the epilator which is fitted with a lead and mains plug, cooling ‘ice’ pack with cover, cleaning brush and storage bag. You also get full, very informative instructions.
The epilator is similar in appearance to an electric shaver, but instead of having cutting blades on the head part, it has a row of rotating ‘tweezers’. It works by the rotating discs acting as tweezers which pull out the hairs as you pass the device ...
