This epilator is a nice "cool blue" colour. It is smaller than I expected (fits nicely into your hand). You can attach an ice pack onto it (more on that later), which makes it a bit bulkier, but not by much.

This is the first epilator that I have used, having just shaved in the past. However, as my mum brought one I thought that I would give it a go to see what epilating is really like. So far I have epilated the hairs on my legs and my underarms.
So, here goes...

You have to make sure that your hairs are quite long (well, longer than shaving but not as short as waxing) before you epilate your legs or underarms. The epilator is made up of rotating tweezers which grab your hairs and pull them out at the root. This means that your legs are much smoother for longer than with shaving, and about the same amount of time as waxing.
There is also an ice pack which you can attach to the back of the epilator. This should soothe the pain as you epilate, along with the massaging system which also claims to sooth the pain.
There are two speed settings which means you can use this on sensitive areas.

Legs
Would you believe it, this was not actually as painful as I expected. There is a bit of pain, but you would expect that as the hairs are being pulled directly out of the roots. I think that a major advantage with this epilator is the ice pack. As you slowly slide the epilator up your leg the ice pack numbs the skin that has just been epilated and really gets rid of the pain! I have not been using this epilator for long, but from reading other reviews I have gathered that the pain gets less the more you use it, which suggests that you will not even need to use the ice pack after a while. The massaging system is claimed to help soothe the pain, but I don’t think it really makes must difference as the ice pack does most of the work.
One problem that I have found is that you need to go over the same patch of skin twice or maybe three times to get rid of the hairs. This means that it does sometimes take a while to epilate your legs - though I think I would have this problem with most epilators. Another thing you need to take into account is that this epilator is mains operated, meaning that you are limited to epilating near a plug (so you can’t do it in the bathroom.) I just put some newspaper on the floor and catch the hairs in that.
You will also need to make sure that you are epilating in a well lit area. Several times I have finished epilating and then later discovered that there are a few stray hairs!
I find that being new to epilating, I am epilating around once a week, but just to catch any stray hairs. Overall, the hairs take about three weeks to grow through. The box claims four weeks, but I think I have quite fast-growing hair.
You should make sure that you do not epilate straight away before going out, as your legs will be left with red spots for a while! As long as you put moisturiser on straight away this should go away soon.
I have also found that I have been left with ingrown hairs. You need to use the exfoliating body puff to make sure that this does not happen to you.
One very good thing about this epilator is the two different speed settings. The fastest one can be used on the main part of your leg but I use the slightly slower setting on the more sensitive areas such as the ankles and the knees, which does make a difference.
Underarms
This is more painful than the legs. As the ice pack makes the epilator bulkier, I have to take it off, which probably adds to the pain. It does not take very long to do the underarms but it is quite awkward to do. I find that it is less painful to do this on the slowest setting.
Most of the other stuff is covered in the “legs” section.
- - - Value for money - - -
We brought this for half price in Argos (around £25 – can’t remember exactly) which I think is very good value for money. It is much cheaper than waxing or buying razors over a long period of time. It is good quality and well made so I think this epilator will last for years to come.
This is my first review so I would appreciate any comments you have!
Advantages: does remove hair for a few days Disadvantages: abit pricey
...ABOUT THE PRODUCT.
The Philips Satinelle Ice, works just like a razor, except instead of cuttin the hair off at the tips this pulls it from the roots. It has several rotaing tweezers that pulls off ya hair and has 2 different speeds. I will not lie and say it does not hurt, cos it really hurts, but i find the faster u run it over your legs or arms the less it hurts. The satinelle comes with an ice pack, that attaches easily to the back of your epilator, ... ...their is less pain, to me it dident stop it hurtin but it does help abit lol.
The epliator is very easy to clean and the head detaches simply by the press of a button, and is easy to reattach. The epilator comes with a brush as it is not washable, and it cleans it well.
They do say that the epilator removes hair for upto a couple of days but i did find after a couple of days they were growing back. The epilator is really good at removing hairs ...

Advantages: Light and easy to use Disadvantages: Not cordless
I had been waxing for many years and following an article in a weekend newspaper decided to try epilation. I bought mine off Amazon when they were on special offer for £25 and it has more than repaid itself in not paying for expensive salon treatments.
This does come with an ice pack which is meant to numb the pain, I found this made it clumsy to use, but once I discarded that then it was a lot easier. I think because I have been waxing for so long ... ...and it is not painful.
It is easy to use and I have used on legs, underarm and bikini line. When using on underarm, as the hairs are courser it does need to be cleaned with the small brush provided.
The results are good although some of the really small hairs don't get captured. The best thing about this is you do not to wait for the hairs to get to a reasonable length before using again, unlike waxing ...

Advantages: Good quality shave Disadvantages: not washable , not cordless
I bought Philips HP 6491 Satinele ICE about 2 months ago from amazon.co.uk at a appreciable price of 23.99 pounds. I was a bit hesitant to switch from waxing to epilation but finally made my mind to go for it and hence made this choice as my first epilator.
I have used it twice since I bought it and the expirence so far has been moderate. Even though it has two speed settings for small and large hair lengths still I have to go through the same patch ...
