I have always been one for a wet shave, I've always believed the sharpness of a true razor gives much better cuts than the rotating blades of an electric shaver. I received the HQ 40 as a birthday present from the wife so I felt I had to give it a fair crack.
-- In the box --
The shaver comes in a nicely compacted box which simply contains the shaver, some instructions and perhaps surprisingly ... ...shaver. Fit the batteries into place and away you go. The shaver is no more than 4 or 5 inches in height so would be ideal for carrying around in a pocket if you ran out of time for your early morning shave. The contrast of the colours is also a nice feature, the front of the shaver is predominantly red with a touch of grey which then runs all down the rear of the shaver.

The shaver comes in a nicely compacted box which simply contains the shaver, some instructions and perhaps surprisingly the two AA batteries that are required to operate the shaver.
-- Useage --
The shaver is operated by pushing up the power button on the front of the shaver. Noise levels are comparable with almost every other electric shaver I have used (though admittedly, most of these were about 10 years ago so noise levels may have reduced on the whole). The shave is adequate though I still dont think the HQ 40 gets anywhere near the smoothness of a wet shave. You also need quite a lot of patience as this is not the fastest shaver you will find, I would say that if you shave every other day, you would probably expect to take 5 minutes to do a complete shave.
Cleaning the shaver is nice and simple. There is a release button on the back of the shaver which removes the entire top. This exposes the inner section which can then be emptied into a bin and then brushed clean so that it is ready for the next use.
-- Verdict --
This is a nice cheap, compact shaver for those of you who are constantly on the move. If you have lots of time in the morning then I would certainly recommend paying a little bit extra and going for a superior model.
The AA batteries probably last for about 1 hour of actual shaving time. The closeness of the cut is adequate but I would still opt for a wet shave if I really wanted to look my best.
Advantages: Shaves close, battery lasts a long time even when a few years old! Disadvantages: Takes a while to shave compared to other electrfic razors
I bought this razor about 5 years ago now! The model in the picture looks slightly different but its exactly the same, just with a couple of design changes e.g. colour and switch. Mine is still going strong after numerous times of me dropping it... I dropped it down the toilet once too ant it still works! (I don't recommend trying this though as its not actually waterproof!)
THE SHAVE - From the first day I got my electric razor it has shaved very ... ...in about an hour! Anyway the shave is very close but it does take a while especially if the hair is long. It does have a beard trimmer also which is also ideal for you side burners out there.
It leaves the skin feeling fine, if not a little dry, but all in all a good smooth shave.
BATTERY - This seriously lasts ages, a days worth of charge and you won't need to charge it again for about a month which I reckon is pretty good! You can also use it ...

Advantages: It's a good all round battery shaver Disadvantages: None
...bought the cheapest the Philips HQ40.
Well, it will suffice until I get back home I reasoned.
But after a few days of use I was pleasantly surprised, and found it to be a very good shaver indeed.
Straight from the box the shaver was ready to use. It comes complete with two AA batteries, a small double-ended cleaning brush and an information sheet explaining how to fit the batteries, how to clean the shaving heads, advice on shaving-head replacement ... ...little white button above the Philips logo and you are in business.
The shaver is attractive in design, extremely light, quiet, and fits comfortably into either hand making it ideal for left or right-hand users.
Another positive aspect is that it can easily be carried in the pocket, or placed inside the glove compartment of a car for instant access.
Changing the batteries is simply a matter of inserting a fingernail, or coin, into the bottom slot ...
