After researching for a few days, the Philips HR1720/50 seemed to fit the bill. In tests it's proved to be one of the most efficient at blending. I believe there is a more recent model available now, but these can still be purchased online from Philips or Amazon.

I bought mine from Argos at a very reasonable £20. Learning how to use it was quite straightforward. It has 2 speeds as well as a pulse setting which is useful for partial blending. I started off by throwing ... ...with an instruction guide as well as a booklet containing various recipes to try out in your new blender.
I'd confidently recommend this Philips HR1720/50 to anyone considering buying a new blender. It does what it says at a great price.
