Dolby Digital is used in almost all DVD releases and in many new computer games, providing you much greater depth to the sound. Where mono systems have one speaker, and stereo systems have 2, Dolby Digital requires 5 speakers + subwoofer to immerse you in sound from all directions.

Experiences

The system was very easy to setup. Each speaker is labeled and every jack plug is colour co-ordinated for quick and easy installation. The colours match most current soundcards, allowing you to plug the system in without even getting the soundcard manual out.

The speakers are very basic (although excellent quality and value for money) with a single on/button. The speakers should be connected to a high quality soundcard for best output. I can now watch DVDs with added depth.

I was disappointed to discover the speakers appear not to support Dolby Pro Logic (an older system used to provide virtual surround sound).

A feature of my soundcard allows low level sounds to be directed to the subwoofer. I found this feature has allowed me to listen to my CD collection with added base and clarity compared to my hifi system. The separation works well and highlights the excellent sound quality and fidelity of this product.

I have noticed when I am not playing any music, the speakers emit a small hiss. The hiss is not noticeable when music is playing and is not an indication of a deeper sound quality issue, but it does exist and makes it difficult listening to anything extremely quietly. I don't want to alarm - when sitting further than 60 cm from any speaker, the hiss is not even audible. I have known many other 5.1 systems do the same.

Conclusion

If you like listening to the loud dynamic sounds of DVDs and excellent clarity and fidelity (for the money), or want to get some bass out of your pc, this system is definitely for you. If you rarely use your PC for DVDs or home entertainment, I would recommend a standard set of stereo speakers, these speakers would be wasted on you.
