Keeping 2 kids under the age of 7 entertained on long car journeys to and from the Lake District (a 3 hour drive) used to be a real pain. My wife tried personal stereos but this resulted in arguments over the CDs and I wasn't keen on spending £100+ on MP3 players especially when they rarely listen to music. Only one thing was guaranteed to keep them quiet and that was gluing them to TV screens. This resulted in two Philips PET830portable DVD players being bought from an online store for £169.99 each. Justifying such expenditure was easy for reasons I will explain in detail.
The players are very light (just shy of 1kg) and can be carried around by children with confidence. They won't cause them to start moaning about their arms aching after a few minutes and thanks to a great design feature the screen hooks onto the back of car seats and couldn't be more secure. If you go over a bump, even at some speed they do not become detached. The PET is 25.5cm in width, 17cm high and 3.1cm deep. If you can picture it, the entire unit is around two thirds of the width of the rear of a car front seat.
The visible screen is a 8.5 inch (measured diagonally) TFT active matrix that projects images in perfect colour without any sort of glitches or problems at a resolution of 16:9. Cartoons, fast paced movies and music all come out on the screen with breathtaking quality that is only beaten by our HD TV at home with channels being supplied via a HD digital box. I really cannot express how pleased I was with the clarity, depth of colour or sharpness.
The controls located to the left of the screen are sensitive and easy to press, even with my over developed adult fingers. When in use there is an easy to use, if basic remote control. We keep these firmly stored away because they are really small and easy to lose. They can also start the riot from hell in the back seat when one of the kids decides to start some mischief by playing around with the volume on the other player. The audio speaker is just below these buttons and although it is tiny it can pump out enough noise to make you swerve off the road! Thankfully there is a socket for headphones to be plugged into meaning that our drives are done in complete silence now leaving me with the ability to concentrate on what I'm doing.
Now, normally £179 for a portable DVD player, especially having to buy 2 would immediately have me looking in the bargain bin but there are some really lovely features that make the PET stand out and make it something of a multi-purpose entertainment machine. Supporting the following formats CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, SVCD, and Video CD it can also play MP3 files so there is no need for any personal stereos in the car. Supporting so many formats is impressive and added onto this, with the appropriate connector it can be attached to almost any flat screen television to project images removing the need for separate DVD players in the kid’s rooms.
I am delighted with the PET and even if it didn't look so high end I would still go and buy another having now had the chance to see it in action. The kids love it, it gives them the freedom to watch DVDs and listen to music on boring car journeys and in their own bedrooms giving me and their mum plenty of peace and quiet. Now you can't put a price on that.
