I purchased a pair of these Philips SHN2500earphones from a local Maplins store about 3 months ago for £29.99 - recommended by one of the clerks of the store for good quality and I had read some good reviews and seen some pictures of it online.
I must say that they weren't exactly what I was expecting. This is the only aspect of the earphones which really bugged me - the noise canceling device of the earphones. I had looked at images online and carefully at the packaging but I really had no idea how large and clunky this box thing actually was. It measure 8cm long, 3.5cm wide and 1.5cm deep and takes a single AAA battery to power it. This box really did annoy me, as its chunky size and weight due to the battery inside. It is positioned, very awkwardly as well. When the earphones are in the ears, if for example you have your musicplayer in your pocket, the box would continuously keep pulling the ear buds out. Fortunately you can leave the noise canceling off and still listen.
Although it may have simply been a bad purchase on my part. I can easily see how these could benefit people who travel on planes a lot as I used these earphones twice when I went on holiday, with noise cancellation turned on and it made quite a difference, but the battery and quality started to diminish on the flight back (about 6 hours of use).
The sound quality was really quite something compared to my old Sennheisser MX500's - music was so much clearer and a joy to listen to. It came supplied with 3 different sized ear buds which fit inside my ears perfectly, apart from occasionally being pulled out due to the annoying box!
These are a good pair of earphones - if sound quality and noise cancelation is what you're after for under £30 then this may be the pair for you. However I am only going to give the SHN 500's a 3* rating as they just seem so impractical and bulky, although if you travel by plane often they may offer you some respite.
