Much better than a Dummies Guide!
Advantages: Very interesting analogies, covers all the 'big' areas Disadvantages: Can be slightly too deep for beginners, requires concentration
...for quite a few years, I've still learnt some interesting new angles from this book. In that sense, it accomplishes the difficult feat of appealling both to ab-initio philosophers and those veterans who think they know it all already!
A good book well worth taking the time to explore. ...

Overpowering Foucault...
Advantages: Interesting theoretical study Disadvantages: Some broader discussion on politics would be welcome
Sara Mills' text on Michel Foucault is part of a recent series put out by the Routledge Press, designed under the general editorial direction of Robert Eaglestone (Royal Holloway, University of London), to explore the most recent and exciting ideas in intellectual development during the past century or so. To this end, figures such as Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricouer and other influential thinkers ... ...include more than 21 volumes in all.
Mills' text, following the pattern of the others, includes background information on Foucault and his significance, the key ideas and sources, and Foucault's continuing impact on other thinkers. As the series preface indicates, no critical thinker arises in a vacuum, so the context, influences and broader cultural environment are all important as a part of the study, something with which Foucault would agree.

How do you know who is a philosopher?
Advantages: Makes philosophy very accessible Disadvantages: Simplifies too much in some areas; is too biased in others...
...to the course of Western philosophy over the past 2500 years. It does not directly involve non-Western philosophies; a simple look at the introduction will show the standard progression of names and ideas from the pre-Socratic Greeks through the philosophers of the classical age, to Christendom, then Enlightenment, post-Enlightentment through to modern thinkers whose names often adorned the faculty lists of Western institutions as much as their names ... ...hand, Osborne tries to define philosophy in the first few pages, with the help of Plato, Gramsci, Marx, and Russell, and comes to a sort of non-conclusion. Osborne's sense of humour, well established in this book, starts here, by his play with the idea that whereas Plato though philosophers should rule the world to set everything to rights, other philosophers speak of the meaninglessness of everything, which would leave one with no content or ideas, ...

The Reason of Things
Advantages: author makes good arguments Disadvantages: is a bit of a let down
...bought this book after buying the first in the series named 'The Meaning of Things'', a book which contained short chapters on different situations in life from Hope to Love to Education and how humans affect these and how they affect humans. 'The Reason of Things' goes on to discuss different, more defined areas of live such as Grief and Remeberance and Moral Matters. Despite being in short chapters, this book, like its predecessor is not designed ...

101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Life
Advantages: a whole new accessible approach to philiosophy Disadvantages: not a very serious philosophy book
I saw this book when I went to my local bookstore to have a browse in the philosophy section. I had been interested in the subject for a while and had been mostly interested in the more traditional approaches to philosophy, for example written by Marcus Aurelius. However, this book caught my eye with its bright muticoloured cover adorned with pictures of a telephone, a glass of water and an apple being peeled.
I had never read anything by the author ... ...bit of research and i found out that the author Roger-Pol Droit is a contemporary French philosopher who likes to encourage the reader to take part in the outlined tasks whcih are similar to some sort of mental gymnastics which allow your mind to think in ways you have never previously have done so. Some of the tasks involved include dialing a random phone number and speaking to someone on the other side of the world in order to experience the feeling ...
