How do you know who is a philosopher?
Advantages: Makes philosophy very accessible Disadvantages: Simplifies too much in some areas; is too biased in others...
...to the course of Western philosophy over the past 2500 years. It does not directly involve non-Western philosophies; a simple look at the introduction will show the standard progression of names and ideas from the pre-Socratic Greeks through the philosophers of the classical age, to Christendom, then Enlightenment, post-Enlightentment through to modern thinkers whose names often adorned the faculty lists of Western institutions as much as their names ... ...hand, Osborne tries to define philosophy in the first few pages, with the help of Plato, Gramsci, Marx, and Russell, and comes to a sort of non-conclusion. Osborne's sense of humour, well established in this book, starts here, by his play with the idea that whereas Plato though philosophers should rule the world to set everything to rights, other philosophers speak of the meaninglessness of everything, which would leave one with no content or ideas, ...

Much better than a Dummies Guide!
Advantages: Very interesting analogies, covers all the 'big' areas Disadvantages: Can be slightly too deep for beginners, requires concentration
...for quite a few years, I've still learnt some interesting new angles from this book. In that sense, it accomplishes the difficult feat of appealling both to ab-initio philosophers and those veterans who think they know it all already!
A good book well worth taking the time to explore. ...

I have had this book for a little while now, and I bought it on the strength of the wisdom of the poem or Credo, which I have reproduced for you below. The best advice I can offer is to print it out and read ... ...don’t have to read it all through. You can be as organised or as casual as you like with it. Leave it in the bathroom and just it up at any page and read that story. And you know your guests will.....Make it your thought for the day if you want. Or read it cover to cover to start with, as I did, because you can always go back and re-read the stories that gave you the most inspiration when you feel you want to. Either way. Most stories are 2-3 pages ...

Interesting but meaningful Philosophy
Advantages: interesting,meaningful Disadvantages: none
Quieter than The Sixteen Pleasures,Philosophy Made Simple is almost ---but not quite---as a fine novel.Although it touches on relationships between parents and children, farming, friendship, and life events, the overarching theme speaks to how philosophical beliefs play out in daily life.Hellenga juxtaposes the history of philosophy, from plato to Kant, with Rudy's search for meaning. This approach, given the seriocomic tone of the novel, seemed artificial ... ...the this devide and a few awkward subplots,Philosophy Made Simple---a poigant fable ,really ---will charm readers.
Sweet and lovely...Hellenga makes his case against Plato well, moving us with pathos and pleasure ,starting us into wisdom.
R.H Popkin is a capable and clever writer, able to mix widely different intellectual strands into a simple whole. It's an interesting and meaningful book for us to read. And when you close the book, maybe you will ...

Very much maligned and misunderstood
Advantages: Life changing Disadvantages: Difficult to truly understand
Of all the philosophers you are ever likely to come across, Nietzsche is perhaps the easiest to read. His creative prose is graceful and poetic, whilst his aphoristic style delivers quick, witty and deeply profound insights.
However, whilst his writings are the easiest to read, they are also the hardest to truly understand - and most of the time this is completely intentional.
The result of this is that people dip into his works and come away believing ... ...have allowed snippets of insight to snowball in entirely the wrong directions, resulting in gross misinterpretations. Look up the case of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb for the most extreme example of this.
Unfortunately, the only way to truly understand the development of Nietzsche's thought is to study all his works, beginning with the Birth of Tragedy and ending with Ecce Homo (and possibly The Will to Power, providing it is understood in context). ...
