And thus the prophet spoke...
Advantages: A good read and quite uplifting Disadvantages: Available for free on the net.
The Prophet is the work of Kahlil Gibran. It has been classed at philosophy, although I think it would have been better qualified as poetry. All the lines are written in verse rather than a prose style. Plus it does not really pose any kind of argument.
There is not really a story to the Prophet. It is basically about a prophet who appears before his people and offers them advise in a poetic form. This would appeal to people who like Paulo Coelho ... ...same basically uplifting message. Essentially the prophet offers advise to the people in a form that could best be described as like a sermon. He talks and we assume the people listen!
The passages are based on various themes. These are love, marriage, children, giving, eating, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, ...

The Reason of Things
Advantages: author makes good arguments Disadvantages: is a bit of a let down
...bought this book after buying the first in the series named 'The Meaning of Things'', a book which contained short chapters on different situations in life from Hope to Love to Education and how humans affect these and how they affect humans. 'The Reason of Things' goes on to discuss different, more defined areas of live such as Grief and Remeberance and Moral Matters. Despite being in short chapters, this book, like its predecessor is not designed ...

101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Life
Advantages: a whole new accessible approach to philiosophy Disadvantages: not a very serious philosophy book
I saw this book when I went to my local bookstore to have a browse in the philosophy section. I had been interested in the subject for a while and had been mostly interested in the more traditional approaches to philosophy, for example written by Marcus Aurelius. However, this book caught my eye with its bright muticoloured cover adorned with pictures of a telephone, a glass of water and an apple being peeled.
I had never read anything by the author ... ...bit of research and i found out that the author Roger-Pol Droit is a contemporary French philosopher who likes to encourage the reader to take part in the outlined tasks whcih are similar to some sort of mental gymnastics which allow your mind to think in ways you have never previously have done so. Some of the tasks involved include dialing a random phone number and speaking to someone on the other side of the world in order to experience the feeling ...

Every one has a philosophy.
Advantages: simply to read Disadvantages: not very deep
...middle class white men tell the rest of us what to think. Some like prefer a good Merlot or Shiraz and then we can be our own therapist. The Consolations of Philosophy is a refreshing alternative to a normal being told what to think philosophy book as it tries to engage the reader. There is no problem with money, career, or even the love life, of any individual says Alain de Botton that can not be put into perspective by philosophers whom have been ... ...together then just think that the problems you're struggling with have been argued over by someone with an egg head for millennia. Heavy deep and snooze related coma inducing thinking that may be but in this book you will be surprised. The Consolations of Philosophy is written in ordinary language for a lay man not for a genius. It is a book that was the inspiration for a fantastic television series on philosophy. The author tries to be funny and ...

The Black Swan
Advantages: Excellent book in content and written Disadvantages: none
...we shall see), survivor of the civil war. The author's thesis is that the future is completely unpredictable, all the forecasts that we are bombarded with in our day-to-day are nothing more than charlatanry to confusing us, to say the better. While this statement appears trivial, it is not. Just think of the forecasts we hear every day, such as: The oil price will not to rise Inflation this year will be… (this is used very well by you know who) Human ... ...in the century XXII Finally, you see what is my point. And it is not difficult for you to find dozens more in a few minutes. This inability to predict is innate to humans, to life as it is, and the extreme complexity of the world in which we live. A consequence of this bad forecast capacity is the application of scientific methods (such as the hard science of physics and mathematics) to the economy, philosophy, history, education (this was by me) ...
