WHAT IS IT: Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney is a cartoon adventure game for the Nintendo DS released in 2005. You play Phoenix Wright a hapless rookie lawyer who must work alongside a number of other somewhat bizarre characters to gather enough evidence to crack a case through cross examination in court.
GAMEPLAY: There are two main modes in the game: investigation and trial. In investigation mode, you have to travel around a number of different locations to gather evidence. At these locations you often encounter witnesses, suspects or a detective with useful information or items of evidence. You have four options in each location:
Talk – you can talk to the person present about a limited number of topics which may increase as you gather more evidence Present – you can show a piece of evidence to a person to try to gather more information on that exhibit Examine – you can look around a location and examine anything of interesting by pointing to it on the touch screen with the stylus Move – this allows you to move to a different location
As you examine the locations and talk to people, you gather more evidence which you will need for the trial. In later episodes of this game, you can use aluminium dust to check for fingerprints and luminol spray to expose bloodstains. Once you have gathered sufficient evidence, the trial will begin. In this mode you listen to testimonies from witnesses and suspects then cross-examine them to expose the contradictions that will help you crack the case. You can present evidence but only have 5 lives so choose carefully otherwise your defendant will be found GUILTY.
CONTROLS: One of my favourite things about this game is how easy it is to play. You can control everything using the stylus and the touch screen and for the most part you don’t have to be painstakingly accurate. You can also hold down the Y button and yell ‘Objection!’ into the microphone when you want to point out a contradiction in court which is really rather fun! It’s very easy to navigate from location to location and the evidence is easy to access at any time you need to remind yourself of the facts.
STYLE: Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney is in a Manga-ish cartoon style with subtitles rather than recorded dialogue. It is really fun to play and watch as suspects pull bizarre facial expressions when put under pressure in court! The characters all have strange little quirks and a lot of the written dialogue is quite funny and often a little surreal! Although it looks like a kids game, the game is challenging enough for adults to enjoy aswell.
OVERALL: This is my favourite game on the DS and I enjoyed this so much that I have played the second in the series and am currently playing the third. It is a really fun game for teenagers and adults although it might be a little too complex for younger children.
