I have had a virgin mobile for the past 2 years and so far never had any problems with coverage apart from the depths of North Devon when I have to stand on a wall to make a phone call.
I purchased a Nokia 3310 to replace my siemens, which was my first purchase via the Virgin.com website, only then to be replaced by my Nokia about a year later.
Virgin Mobile offers you a discount if you have already purchased a phone from them previously and chuck in a £5 air time voucher to get you started. Sort of an up grade if you like.
Virgin mobile offer something called Virgin Extras when you are online, you can set up text alerts for free on the following subjects i.e. Sports news, music, going out (cinema releases), staying in (video/DVD releases) travel offers and news, shopping, organiser and fun such as horoscopes and lottery results all this to your phone for free.
The reason I switched to pay as you go was because I used to run up such a phone bill and wonder if it was really me using all that air time, so with this system I now only have to pay £10 every 3 months for my phone, and yes I do have friends and I can manage on a tenner!
You can now apply for an E-Top up card which enables you to purchase airtime whilst out shopping with the aid of a quick swipe of your card at a check out at some branches of Boots, Argos, Boots, KJC, Link, Asda and soon Sainsbury’s and Tesco. This eliminates he need to purchase airtime vouchers and the need to sit on the phone programming the scratched off number into your mobile.
Now the tariff part, how much does it cost to run a Virgin Phone?
Not forgetting you do not have the need for a contract or any hidden charges only the price of your phone and delivery is free, via the good old first class Royal Mail, (mind you saying that is was couriered to my house) and usually despatched at on your doorstep in 24 hours, if purchased on line with a major credit or debit card.
On receipt of your delivery you usually have to show the postman or delivery driver the card you purchased it on for security reasons.

~What you get for your money?~
I never feel robbed when purchasing a new mobile phone from Virgin as you always have friendly helpful advice on the phone or via email, and you get a welcome pack when you purchase a new phone.
The pack includes a brand new phone, battery pack and charger of course, hands free kit for safer driver, even though you should not use your phone whilst driving. A Virgin service pack which contains a bounty of goodies such as your SIM card and completely new phone number, a £5 airtime voucher, service guide to get you up and running, and quick guide for those of you who are really impatient. Some funky contact cards and a VirginExtas guide, and a Virgin Net CD, I use mine as a drinks coaster, so it did come in handy.
This Virgin.com/mobile phone site is easy to master and very simple to purchase a new phone with a good variety of the latest mobiles, competitively priced and good value for money.
I had to replace my broken Motorola T191 due to a design fault!!! So with the help of Ciao and the internet, I spent most of a Saturday searching various websites and providers. I looked at Orange, O2, Vodaphone, T-Mobile (I was already with them), Virgin and The Carphone warehouse. My decision was made not only by the service a particular provider could offer me, but also which mobile I went for. In the end I was swayed towards Virgin. It was easy ... ...some might say). They already have an excellent reputation but I did check out a few ops on Ciao just in case I was misinformed. I ordered my Panasonic GD67 online on Saturday evening, I was given a choice of delivery times….morning, afternoon or evening. I chose evening as I knew I would not be home until 6.30pm, there was also a box for special instructions so I made a note that I was leaving for work at 9am and would be home at 6.30pm. They also ...

Advantages: no confusing tarrifs, free voicemail Disadvantages: it is expensive to call mobiles not on your network
So you think that your network gives you loads of free minutes. We have all had the wool pulled over our eyes, they are not free, or as they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch. We pay for them!
How?

The answer’s simple. You pay line rental and thats there to pay for the things that you’re being given for ‘free’, such as ‘free’ minutes and a ‘free’ phone. They also want to make ... ...of your ‘free’ minutes – they take some money from you. In reality, because you’re often tied to a year-long contract, these freebies will end up costing you dearly.
Take a typical deal that offers 20 ‘free’ minutes for £12.99 line rental. That’s nearly 65p a minute! Besides that, your ‘free’ minutes may not include calls made during the day and calls to mobiles on networks other than your own. ...

...strengthened the usage of mobile phones in the UK. Richard Branson (famed for having a finger in every business pie… and a beard) has launched Virgin Mobile as a joint venture with One2One. Virgin Mobile is, in essence, the UK's first "virtual" mobile operator. This means that the new Virgin Mobile service operates on the One2One network, which is then brought to you, the consumer. The One2One network is one of the most technically advanced in the ... ...means users who use their phones late at night will not suddenly experience tariff charges returning to 15p after midnight. There is no peak or off peak and 0800 numbers are free (a service not found on most networks). Text messages are 10p each, calls to non Virgin Mobiles are charged at 35p per minute and voicemail retrieval is free. For all except the high-end business users, Virgin Mobile should equal a cheaper all-round service. Although the ...

...of the day and the phones on offer are simply stunning.
OK, the phones may be a little pricier than other prepay networks but the tarrifs are cheaper and there is no time limit on the call vouchers, meaning you won't lose out on call credit.
Then comes in the interesting stuff....virgin extras. Through these on your mobile you can buy music, electrical goods or book a holiday through virgin at a discount. Also, you can be sent text alerts on a ... ...and help service are useful too.
There is also optional insurance, e-mail alerts and you can even choose to pay for your calls via direct debit.
More fun than your average network including features that I haven't seen on other prepay schemes. A hassle free way to own a mobile!
Last but not least if you don't want to change your phone you can buy a SIM only pack for £10 including £5 worth of calls which at present is the best SIM only deal across ...

Advantages: Good camera, shake control, loud speaker Disadvantages: dodgy video
Bought this phone from VirginMobile on a £12 contract. My old phone was going crazy and decided it was time for a change. After hours of internet research i arrived at this phone, The W580i. And what a phone...
First off. The screen off an excellent screen gives you a high quality visula experience, great for viewing photos and videos. The 2MP camera is brilliant however the video quality is not so spectacular. The video quality lowers slightly, still viewable but not as good as the camera quality.
It's sleek design and stylish flick at the bottom gives the phone a very smooth look. However the plastic used to create the phone does make it feel cheapish. But the accesories included definatley make up for that.
The walkman feautre is ecellent, its user interface is somewhat simlar to the Sony PS3, remarkably simple to use ...
Advantages: It does what it needs to most of the time and looks cool Disadvantages: Clumsy and easy to do things accidentally, and doesnt always work
Update - Jan 2009
I have now had my phone for just under a year. In October I had to get it replaced because the screen wouldnt turn on. It was they replaced with a refurbished phone (virginmobile policy) and that last about 2 weeks before it developed white lines across the screen. This got increasingly worse over the following couple of weeks and I have not used the phone since before xmas because it is impossible to read from the screen. Personally I think it is a design fault, as the sliding phone is a weak spot. Its a good phone, when it is not faulty. Therefore I change my rating and do not recommend this phone. It is not worth the hassle!

Advantages: Robust reliable easy to use Disadvantages: silly internet button
I got my K800i from virginmobile about 5 months ago and have been very impressed with it, as a phone it does all you want and does it well and the bluetooth is essential to me in my job of driving instructor, i do find that at times the little joystick needs a firm hand and the internet button is a pain with my large hands, I keep catching it by mistake! the menu system is easy to follow and set up. As for the camera this is the best I have seen on a phone by far and can easily be used as a proper snapshot camera being in your pocket at all times, my digital slr doesnt come out half as often as it did!! It is also robust with a good quality screen having dropped it a couple of times it seems to have come to no harm at all. ...
