...mainly on creating stunning B&W digital images.
***TECHNIQUE
The first section of the mag covers the 'technique' which provides the basic skills to make stunning digital images in different ways. For example, in the special B&W editions, these techniques include converting and combining RAWs; dodging and burning (digital diffusion); film grain and borders; and producing mono inkjet prints.
Specifically, I learned from this section that creating ... ...start-up the required settings. For digital camera users, this section provides the ultimate way/technique to convert RAW files. By the way, taking photos in a RAW file is similar to TIFF or JPEG with fewer pixels but its advantages is to do their flexibility and the quality of the data they hold, not the size of the image. A need for Practicality
Advantages: Ideal for Intermediate digital photographers, informative, good price Disadvantages: Few too many adverts, not ideal for Beginners
...for buying equipment.
CONCLUSION
Practical Photography is a very good magazine for the intermediate photographers out there – aimed mainly at digital photographers, not film. I would not recommend beginners to buy this magazine as there are not enough basic technique guides / workshops for using photo editing software etc. The guides that have been provided are aimed at those who already have some knowledge of the basic concepts of the photo editing ... ...and informing you of the more specialist equipment out there. I would recommend the buying guide, as its informative, however make sure it covers what you think you want to buy, before you purchase the magazine.
There are a few too many adverts in the feature articles.
The magazine is brilliantly priced (most other photo magazines are between £4 - £5), however it doesn’t always come with a free cd, which many other magazine’s now do.

The technique items are, however, useful for the beginner as they do also contain an overview of the tools used in the package, the skills used, keyboard shortcuts and tips – so that ever the most ham-fisted and non-savvy might achieve something that is usable! That being said, there were useful features on White Balance and Depth of Field – something very often overlooked by a lot ... ...lot of photos, but ultimately better techniques should not always be software-based – I gain more satisfaction by knowing that I have got the shot I want without resorting to Photoshop.
For people who think that this might still be the magazine for them, I would make one last suggestion – if you want to learn about “Better Digital Photography” look for online tutorials – there is a wealth of information on the web about digital photography and an ...
