Pick me up

What is Pick me up magazine?

Pick me up is a woman’s magazine which seems to target group appears to be at women who enjoy real life stories.
How come I am reading it?

I was given a few copies of this magazine by a friend and including a New Year edition which I thought that it may be more cheerful than these usual types of magazines that maybe full of hope and new starts.

The cost

This magazine is usually 70p but the copy I have was available for the Christmas period so was £1.45 but boasted that it had 92 pages.

Cover

The cover is a warning to the doom and weird stories that are involved in this magazine. It was clear however from the cover that this was not the case. Headlines such as I breastfed my dog, boiled alive on a mini break and I castrated my rapist dad gave an insight that this was not going to make light reading.
What else is inside?

Once inside the stories are listed on contents page. This does include recipes, horoscopes, fashion and health. There are a vast number of competitions and puzzles along with real life stories.

What is Jeremy Kyle doing in here?

Jeremy Kyle has an advice column and if you have seen his TV show this section will have no surprises for you. He does tell people what he thinks and then gives little more than common sense approach to a problem. If I had a problem I think I could come up with the same solutions in less than 5 minutes. I feel he is only there as a known name to sell magazine more than due to inspired advice.
Weird stories

One if the weirdest stories are of a woman who breast feeds her dog. This is not a misspelling. I find some of the stories in this magazine would be better to spend their time talking to a psychiatrist rather than selling their stories for a bit of cash. I have read reviews on Dooyoo on five reasons why I think I am strange after reading this magazine I cannot imagine any reader feeling weird unless they like one contributor has also named their child Ikea after the shopl.

Top tips

This magazine has a page full of tips which the magazine pays reader £25 if printed with a photo. The tips are amusingly useless from using spaghetti if you run out of cocktail sticks to my personal favourite how to make a pair of slippers out of sanitary towels.
Is there anything cheerful in this magazine?

Surprisingly yes. There are a few very emotional stories with a happy ending but also an article on reasons to be cheerful in 2010. After reading this article I feel bemused how these could make me walk with a lighter step but more wondering how drunk the writers were when deciding what was going to make readers happier in 2010. The most amusing was a new set of scales which not only keeps track of your body fat and weight but also tracks your menstrual cycle.

How do I feel about the magazine?

I am quite surprised at my experience of reading this magazine. I was expecting the sad stories but I was shocked at how disturbed and distorted the perceptions of the people in the true life stories are. I am left wondering how come the interviewer did not suggest that they need serious psychological help.
