We chose Pickfords because a.their price was not far out of the competitors, b. the lady who approached us was very nice, c. because was a name we were used to see so though they would be reputable.
Ended up being extremely expensive with all the hidden costs+ poor service+ damages into ANYTHING they could damage from mishandling and storing.
They offered us transport insurance which was 4 times ourYEARLY insurance premium which WOULDN"T COVER any damages anyway for items we had packed ourselves, in other words for anything since we did the packing!!!!!
We had our good stored for 3 months for £650pm!!!!Such rinsers, a carpet they couldn't fit in a container they charged £40pm to store it lose!!!
Our goods came back and every single piece of antique furniture had chipped veneer, french polish damaged, chunks missing, huge bookselves mishandled and frames warped etc etc
One container all goods mouldy, boxes came back completely with dissolved bottoms, all contents had to be discarded!!!
Another container there were mice in and goods were eaten!!!!
Storage conditions were probably arctic! A big plastic container with olive oil came completely frozen, half the way down was inside like thick rice!!!, A beautiful 17thC chest of drawers the marketery cracked open, same with the gesso in some big picture frames!
The restorer we brought for a quote reckons is the weather conditions the goods were stored!
On delivery, men were intimidating to the point of being scary! They were swearing, making nasty comments about some old furniture, mishandling them, stacking boxes upside down etc etc etc.
The result, a move that costed about 6k and an insurance claim for 5.5k
