Manufacturer's product description
Pioneer Electronics offers the fastest DVD-ROM available. The DVD-106s/116 main feature is a low- vibration mechanism making it a very silent drive. The noise reduction is -2dB less than DVD-115 and DVD-114. The DVD-106s/116 features up to 16x data transfer rate (21MB/s), average random seek time of 85ms and random access time of 95ms for DVD. All built in half height format with Pioneers well tested slot-in mechanism enabling safe, fast and easy access to your data. Available in ATAPI version and able to read CDs as well as DVDs (except DVD-RAM) this drive represents the latest in DVD-ROM technology.
...: a headphone jack, volume control, power-on/busy LED and load/eject button.
On the rear of the drive you have the usual IDE interface, power connection and analog audio output connector.
Between the IDE and audio connector you have the jumper block for master, slave and cable select. On the right you have the digital out or SPDIF output. This is a definite plus is you are planning on hooking it up to the digital inputs on your soundcard or Dolby decoder. Keep in mind that the tray version of this drive, the DVD-116, does not have a SPDIF connector on it.
While you don't see this as often anymore, many older DVD-ROM drives only worked in PIO Mode 4 or below. When using PIO Mode 4 it only had a maximum through put of 16.6MB/s. Pioneer's DVD-106S can reach a theoretical 21,600 KB/s when reading data DVD's. This is about 5,000 KB/s over...

Advantages: Can burn Dual Layer (8.5GB) media (4x speed), 16x speed for DVD+-R, CD-RW 32x24x40x Disadvantages: Regions can be changed 5 times
...Pioneer DVR-108 16x DVD+/-RW is one of the best or the best DVD+-RW drive on the market. Pioneer's products has good reliability. With this drive you can burn 4.7GB data in about seven minutes. It's also supports writing Dual Layer media - 8.5 GB discs at 4x speed. If you're planing to buy DVD+-RW drive than choose Pioneer DVR-108. Pioneer name means quality. This drive isn't very fast, but burning and reading quality is excellent. It uses RPC-2 region protection. You can change region 5 times and then you will be locked on the last one. This is only one disadvantage of this drive, but now almost all DVD drives have protection from changing regions.
I hope i help you to decide buy or not this great drive. I guarantee 99% that you will be satisfied your decision to buy this device....

Advantages: Reliablity, good brand, cheap Disadvantages: Fairly old technology now, only lasted a year!
...I’ve had my Pioneer 105/A05 for over a year now and I’ve been more than happy with it. At the time a paid a princely sum of £160 for this piece kit, these days you can get a similar spec DVD writer for £50.
The basic specifications of the drive are:
Write Speed:
DVD-R 4X, 2X, 1X-CLV
DVD-RW 2X, 1X-CLV
CD-R 16X,12X,8X,4X-CLV
CD-RW 8X,4X-CLV
Read Speed:
DVD-ROM (Single) Max. 12X CAV (Dual) 8X CAV
DVD-R, DVD-RW 2X (Older Media)
DVD-R, DVD-RW 6X (High Speed DVDR Media)
Video CD 4X CLV
CD-ROM Max. 32X CAV
CD-RW Max. 32X CAV
CD-Audio Max. 32X-CAV
My drive was OEM so it came with no cables or instructions but it was a synch to install. People are often afraid of upgrading their PC’s but I often say that if you can put a piece of flat pack furniture together you can do most jobs on your PC. OK...

This is a great value docking station with an excellent set of features. Works perfectly with my Nano and all the remote control functions work as described. As well as looking good the sound quality is good through the line-out socket and is great for more
I had been without a DVD-RW drive for a few weeks since my last drive gave up. The first thing I noticed when looking for a new one was how cheap they are now. The last one I had I'd only paid £35 for thinking that was cheap, but now you can get them for more
