DVR-231-S You just found the replacement for your VCR! The DVR-231-S is a perfect way to create your own movies on DVD, or to record your favorite TV programs. It records up to 10 hours* of video, enough for your vacation movies or an all-day marathon of your favorite TV show. Using a DVD-RW (in VR Mode) you can do some basic editing, such as erasing a title or making changes to chapters within a title. It gets even better. The DVR-231-S is a versatile media player, compatible with DVDs, DVD-R/RWs, CDs, and CD-R/RWs. And its audio performance is superb, thanks to a high-end 24-bit/192kHz D-A converter.
Advantages: Great quality, lots of useful features Disadvantages: Takes a lot of time to work out how to use!
...This is a great product, but only if you take the time to work out how to use all the features and link them together. However, my wife who has never had any problems with technology cannot fathom it, and has to ask me to carry out any recording functions.
That having been said the playback, recording and sound quality are all very good - especially through HDMI cable.
The player has a few tricks up its sleeve in that it can store pictures from a digital camera and has a jukebox to store music from MP3 players.
The in-built TV guide is exceptional. You can list your preferences and the guide will then automatically show recommended programmes for viewing and recording. Also films and sport are shown in different colours so are easy to pick out.
The remote link function is also handy. It means the DVR can be hidden from view...

Advantages: HDMI, easy set up with calibration microphone Disadvantages: no divx but otherwise perfect
...I bought this unit as a replacement for my pioneer 313 home cinema system and I cannot fault it. It is a very reasonable price for a complete system with HDMI output (I paid £162 for a multi region one)
The only difference between the 230 and the 231 is the colour by the way, the 230 is black, the 231 silver - designed to complement the sony Bravia TVs (which I have!)
The unit was really easy to set up, just follow the on screen wizard, and it comes with a microphone for calibrating the speakers, which was fun.
The sound quality is excellent on DVDs, CDs and normal TV, and the picture quality on scart and HDMI is superb, the home theatre sync is a nice touch and complements the smart remote control. It is a shame that the european model does not support divx, but I have a HXD860 that does, so it does not matter too much.
It would be nice...

Advantages: Great sound quality and picture quality for video gaming Disadvantages: Bad looking remote
...Took my time choosing what plasma to buy, I believe anything above 32' should be a plasma and I''m glad I paid the extra an got this Pioneer, OK it didn''t come with a stand as the 4270XD but you get picture in picture and two hdmi i/p. Build Quality is excellent, Picture quality excellent on DVD (will look for a upscaler dvd 1080i), Xbox360 1080i looks fantastic, standard TV and sky (haven''t upgraded) good enough as this is a HD TV rightfully, Can support 1080p but believe only 24Hz blue ray dics format.I have read that people don''t like the remote I can''t see why it matches the TV with the same look and is metal not cheap plastic also you can programme it for your sky boxes, dvd/dvr, and vcr with all manufacturer codes supplied so three extra devices can be easily added....

Having a few problems with this drive.
It doesn't want to burn my Kodak 16x -R media at more than 12x... and it keeps failing when burning the DVD unless I drop the speed. It seems to burn OK at 4x, 6x and 8x. Funny thing is that it does consistently... more
I had been without a DVD-RW drive for a few weeks since my last drive gave up. The first thing I noticed when looking for a new one was how cheap they are now. The last one I had I'd only paid £35 for thinking that was cheap, but now you can get them for more
