When my daughter age 3 had chicken pox during the summer, I tried in vain to stop her scratching. Lashings of calamine lotion applied to her spots did nothing to stop the itchyness.
With this in mind I went to my local chemist to see if they had anything I could use or any tips that might help. Piriton I always thought was for older children and adults so I was rather suprised when the pharmacist offered me a big bottle of the stuff.
Piriton syrup can be used by children over the age of one year and adults. Giving fast relief for ichyness caused by a variety of things ( chicken pox included) eg nettle, rash hives, heat rash, prickly heat, reaction to food stuffs, insect bites and hayfever.
Obviously this medication needs to be used with some care and if symptons persist then contact your Doctor for advice. One of the side effects is that piriton can make you quite drowsy and you should avoid alcohol whilest taking it ( thats for the adults!!. The syrup itself tastes rather medcine like with a hint of peppermint so young children may well not like its taste too much.
If you should have a child with chicken pox then I would definetly recommend piriton syrup for near instant relief of itchyness.

I use this for Ambi when she is anywhere near horses, and her eyes blow up otherwise. Unfortunately, it's never made her drowsy :O)
