You wouldn't believe the bargain I found when buying Piz Buin Mousse from Boots.com. I only wanted a starter kit because I knew how expensive self tans can be and I wasn't prepared to spend a lot of money to look like an orange (it has been known!).
For £3.32 (normal price £4.99) I was able to get a 'Try Me' Starter Kit containing:
50ml Piz Buin (Mid) Self Tan Foam (not quite a mousse)
The Neutrogena face wash is normally £3.99 so it was as though I bought the exfoliator and got the self tan foam and accessories free! The normal price of the 150ml Piz Buin foam is £11.99 so really, the whole set is huge value.
The bottle doesn't really give any good tips for getting a good tan but I already knew a few handy tips. I spent the day on myself - very therapeutic! - And only did my legs to see what the effects were going to be. I sat on the edge of the bath, soaked my legs in hot water, shaved (so I didn't look like a hairy orange), exfoliated (I had to use the face wash since I didn't have any body scrub but it was still brilliant), and then patted my legs dry with a towel. I moisturised around my knees and ankles because those are the driest areas and more prone to the tan. I put on the applicator gloves and started squirting the foam into my hands. It's quite strange because it still sounds like a liquid in the bottle but comes out as a white foam blob. It came out easily once it got started and I probably put a plum size dollop in my palm then began working in an upward direction (avoiding my ankles) until I got to my knees.
A great tip is to then reload your palm with more foam but mix it with moisturiser and make sure you cover the whole of your foot with the mix (including in between your toes). This makes sure the foam isn't going to turn a very dark orange on these dry areas. Do the same again for your knees and then you can revert back to the foam on its own for the thigh area.
I was only doing my legs but if I had kept going, the dry areas are elbows which again would mean moisturiser. For faces, exfoliate and make sure your face is dry before adding foam. Wipe over eyebrows so there isn't any excess after applying it and make sure you don't brush your teeth for a few hours or you will be left with a white ring around your mouth!!
Now back to my legs. The foam dries surprisingly quickly - it only takes around 5 minutes to dry but it is a good idea to wait the longest possible time before putting clothes on as the smell of the tan easily gets into clothes and it doesn't smell that good (but isn't repulsive!). The smell is really hard to describe but even from the lid there is such a strong scent. The tan doesn't take that long to develop so I went out shopping for a few hours and came back to find I did have quite a orange glow which was much nicer than the pasty white left from winter!
From watching adverts when Piz Buin came out, it said this was supposed to be streak free but I did have quite a few streaks. This may have been due to over rubbing the foam into my legs or even from the applicator gloves. Because it is foam, it quickly disappears on the body so it was impossible to see which parts had been covered. As the bottle says, the tan is long lasting (7 days) and if you want to top it up, it is a good idea to do it every 4 days. I decided not to wait that long and did it again the next day and got an even better tan which wasn't as streaky. The only place I do have a streak is on both my arms where I must have rubbed against my legs!!
Once the tan had fully developed (the next day to be sure) I had a close inspection of the result. On my legs (below my knees), the tan seemed to develop in the pores and it looks like I have freckles on my legs which are very orange. By putting anything white against my legs, they look very orange and since I seem to have missed a bit just above my heel it looks very obvious that it is fake.
The only place I was happy with the tan was on my thighs. I'm not sure why it worked so well there but it is streak less and has a very even colour and less orange than my legs. I have tried the tan several times and generally seem to get the same result each time and have found that diluting the foam each time with moisturiser is the only way to get the best result because it makes it less orange. Because this is only a starter kit, it only contains 50ml and from a couple of full leg applications I can just see by holding it to a light bulb that there is only half a bottle left. If I had done my full body I am not sure that there would be enough left to top up the tan.
Overall, I'd have to say this is quite an orange tan and doesn't look that natural. I was only using the Mid tan but there is a Max tan available which is much darker. I am so glad that I only used this on my legs because they can still be covered in this weather and would dread to see the result of this being on my face! The price of this kit has now gone back to £4.99 but the contents have changed - it now holds the Max foam, tips for application, exfoliator (I think it's the same one) and the bag is different. I don't regret spending the £3.32 because I can still use the face wash, I'm sure the gloves will come in handy and the little bag is very useful. I'm afraid I can only give 2 stars - would have been higher for streak less, more brown and less hassle.
I've added some picture of the effect (sorry but they are not very good!) and the kit I got.
Advantages: quick drying, natural colour Disadvantages: quite difficult to apply
...the perfect self-tan I noticed Piz Buin Self Tanning Foam Max in Tescos on Thursday night. Normally £11.99, I noticed it was on special offer making it £8.99 – a saving of £3.00. We’ve all seen the advert – the one that claims that you don’t have to walk around in weird positions until it dries as it dries quickly. This particular formula comes in Max or Mid, but they only seemed to have Max. I picked it up and decided to give it a go.
The Packaging
... ...On the back it says Piz Buin in Orange and Dermatologically Tested again. Underneath this it says the following:
“Max Self Tan Foam. Suitable for face and body. For darker skin. This new formula (patent pending*) will give you a natural healthy glow which begins to develop in 30 minutes, lasts for at least seven days and fades naturally. Light foam spreads easily for an even application and dries in less than 5 minutes. Oil-free formula to keep ...

Advantages: Quick drying. Nice colour Disadvantages: A bit pricey
...in a white box with Piz Buin written on it in orange. It says on it that it is dermatologically tested and tells you about it in 5 languages. I purchased the Mid self tan foam although there is a max which is a deeper colour. I decided on the lighter colour just in case I made a mess of it. It also says it dries in 5 minutes which is quite good as I never seem to have the extra time to sit around naked for ages. Unfortunately the instructions are ... ...the box back together again. However they are pretty much what you would expect. If you use common sense you should be able to remember them for the next time.
The foam itself is in a white tube with orange writing and a pump action dispenser. The instructions tell you to thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate your skin paying special attention to feet, knees and elbows. But to make sure your skin is dry before applying. It gives the usual instructions ...

Advantages: Good colour, quick to apply, quick drying Disadvantages: A bit patchy, no guide tint, disliked texture, wouldn't use on face
...Boots where I bought the Piz Buin Self Tanning Mousse in MID. I've self tanned before and so exfoliated well to avoid dark patches on the elbows etc. Always leave your skin to settle to its natural ph level after showering/bathing before you apply any tanning product.
So ready to tan I applied the mousse in smoothing circles to avoid streaks. It didn't exactly sink in and you couldn't see where it had been applied because there is no tint. The mousse ... ...of the nice generally even colour. A little more practice and finesse may be needed for the optimum result. Self tanning newbies should choose a different product to start with.
A good alternative to this product would be Piz Buin Tinted Lotion or the Piz Buin Gradual Tan range. ...

Review of Piz Buin Self Tanning Mousse
Advantages: quick and easy tan Disadvantages: price!
I am possibly the palest person ever; I don’t tan in the sun I just burn, so my only answer was the fake stuff!
I have tried out lots of different fake tan's all claiming to do great things but most of them are rubbish. Most fake tans last only a couple of days or the go all streaky or fade out making you look patchy!
I saw this one advertised on TV, saying it gave an even and natural looking tan and only takes 5mins to dry!
Well anything is worth ... ...stuff.
It is a Johnson&Johnson product comes in a 125ml bottle and cost's around £9.90, expensive but worth it. It comes in a light to medium tan or a max tan, being so pale I got max! It does have a smell to it but it is hard to describe the smell to you, as it doesn’t really smell like anything else, you do end up smelling of the product all-day.
When you shake the bottle it sounds as if the product is a liquid, but when you dispense it into ...

Advantages: Very reasonably priced for self tan Disadvantages: Patchy and streaky
It seemed like a good idea at the time but straying away from my usual fake tan has been a disaster! Hours after using PizBuinselftanningmousse I began to nitice a difference, not dramatically so but enough to notice. After eight hours I have numerous patches and several streaks, the colour is quite orangey and uneven. I'm not the most professional of fake tan appliers but this seemed to go on easy, too easy.
The smell is also quite strong and all I can say is thank god I didn't use too much and end up being tangoed for the week!
On the plus side, if you have darker skin and want to boost your tan this may well work for you, streaks show much clearer on us milky folk. Also it dried rapidly and left no stickiness. ...
