Perils on your Patch
Review of Poisonous Plants by
shybelle
Advantages: Colour with Care
Disadvantages: See Text
...Britain from the effects of poisonous plants a child or pets natural curiosity can make them very vulnerable. Hazardous plants can cause symptoms and effects ranging from rashes, abdominal pain and sickness to in extreme cases even death.
There are literally thousands of plants available to gardeners nowadays. It's estimated that only about a hundred or so of these may cause some harm and fewer than half of those have been shown to be seriously ... ...ways to the effects of poisonous plants. In some, even a small amount of the toxin can cause severe symptoms whilst in others it may only cause mild stomach pain etc. Obviously children and pets are far more vulnerable due to their lesser body weight. From an early age try to teach children never to pick or eat berries, leaves etc from the garden. Small children at the crawling or toddler stage should always be supervised . Be very cautious also ...

Exotic Yet So Easy to Grow
Review of Impatiens - Parrot Plant by
petehall
Advantages: Extremely long flowering period. Very easy to grow and to propogate.
Disadvantages: Needs regular care.
...of the Busy Lizzy. Impatiens Niamniamensis Congo Cockatoo, to give it the full botanical name, produces masses and masses of small red and yellow flowers in the shape of a parrot's beak, for months on end. It makes a truly beautiful house plant that is very easy to propagate and has an exceedingly long flowering season. Pinch out a side shoot and put it in some water, in no time at all it will be sprouting roots and ready for potting.
They can be ... ...try a different position. An east facing window sill in a sunny position is where ours does best but our neighbour finds it best on the kitchen window which is north facing.
For some strange reason there are precious few available in garden centres - we've only ever seen two - the most recent being at Gardenland on the A454 from Wolverhampton to Bridgnorth in the midlands. Check out the latest RHS Plant Finder, you may just be lucky. The ease of ...

Fuschia standards
Review of Fuschia standards by
yorkie2
Advantages: Develops good feeling of self achievment
Disadvantages: Soon becomes a habit
FUSCHIA STANDARDS
Up until 2 years ago every minute of my life was taken up by fuschias. I grew them for
show as well as pleasure and you could find a fuschia in every nook and cranny of my
garden and greenhouse. Since my wife became housebound i just grow a few for
pleasure because i have not enough time to justify their beauty.
Growing a standard fuschia is an easy task for any gardener with a greenhouse or
conservatory. For your first time ... ...size flower with red petals and white sepals, or, perhaps `display` which is a
single flower almost entirely pink.
You can grow a quarter standard in one season but really they are better grown during
the first season to flower the second. Just for interest a quarter standard is between 10 and 18" inches high not counting the
blooms. A half standard is between 18 and 30" and a full standard between 30 and
42".
Select your cutting early and ...

All about Aubretia.
Review of Aubretia by
mumsymary
Advantages: Pretty and attractas butterflies
Disadvantages: none
Aubrietia
I have several Aubretia plants in my garden. I visited the garden centre last Sunday and bought some more too.
.
Aubretia is an evergreen perranial plant that is named after a French flower painter. Aubrietia is a low plant that trails over the soil and loves to creep and cover rocks and walls, aubrietia will grow between and over paving stones. The leaves are oval with toothed edges often these leaves are variegated with cream around ... ...on walls and in containers. Aubretia prefers a south facing position and does like a lime soil. Aubretia is a pretty plant that gives lots of ground cover, but the main reason why I like it is because the flowers have lots of nectar which attracts butterflies to my garden. The purple and pink varieties are the best for attracting butterflies I think. I bought a few different Aubretia hybrids to find out which ones will have butterflies feasting on ...
