When I did a lot of online gaming, everyone in our clan needed the ability to talk to one another on *comms* - which is were essential for competitive gaming to co-ordinate attacks or defence as soldiers in WW2. Trouble was, my cheap headset made it hard for others to hear me (lots of crackle) and was uncomfortable to wear as well.
So I treated myself to the Plantronics Audio 90, and immediately I had perfect clarity of all the game sounds, and of all the voices of my friends, and they could now hear me perfectly.
Very comfortable to wear. The headset is not flimsy but has a decent weight to it without being overly heavy, and a feeling of quality.
There is a volume up/down wheel on a panel on the cable. Also a mute switch. Occasionally the mute switch would catch on my clothes and I'd spend a while working out why no one could hear me... only to realise this was the cause.
The headset cable itself is well made, not likely to rip or tear unless given very harsh treatment. The length of the cable also gives a nice freedom to move around - your not tied to being close up to the screen, unless you really have it plugged in to a pc which is far removed from your screen.
In honesty I would prefer to have a USB version, as this Plantronics Audio 90 requires 2 plugs to be fitted in to the pc (at the rear on mine). One for hearing sound, the other for the microphone. And that makes it a pain for switching back to speakers... as you have to mess around at the back of your pc changing the plugs about. However as it still works fine, I'm not going to buy a USB version for the sake of it.
Sometimes you have to treat yourself to quality as its best choice in the long run. I must have had the Plantronics Audio 90 approaching 4 years now, and it's still as good as new.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Left: 2 x 6 pin mini-DIN (PS/2 style) - female, 1 x 4 PIN USB Type A - male - Right: 1 x 4 PIN USB Type A - male, 2 x 6 pin mini-DIN (PS/2 style) - female, 1 x 6 pin mini-DIN (PS/2 style) - female
Sorry for the low rating but felt the review needed more information on aspects such as the actual sound quality, does the product have seperate controls for the microphone as in can you mute it, length of lead would also be something I would want to read about. I am sure there are other things as well, so if you add to your review give me a shout in my guestbook and I will return to re-read and hopefully re-rate.
Advantages: Durable, light, good microphone, inbuilt volume control/microphone mute slider Disadvantages: Mostly for business use/audioconferencing, model discontinued
