After finishing the bulk of my Christmas shopping, I was after a few small gifts for my children as stocking fillers. I didn't want to spend a fortune on something, so I didn't know quite what to buy. I had brought a few small cars to go in Gareth's stocking, some sweets and chocolate, but was on the lookout for something else.
I popped into 'Toy 'R Us' in Cardiff for some inspiration. I spent a while wandering around the aisles, and then I discovered the ideal stocking filler - Play Doh - or to be more precise, a small tub of Play Doh. This small tub was an absolute bargain at £1.49.
I had already bought some of the normal sized tubs of 'Soft Stuff' from the Early Learning Centre, so I thought that this small one would be ideal.
~~ The Packaging ~~
The Play Doh itself comes in a small yellow container, with a yellow label on it, which goes all the way around the tub. On the front of the label there is a red cloud shape and Play Doh is written on this in white.
On the back of the label it lists the maker's details, telephone number etc. This is actually made by Hasbro and I believe they originated in China. The manufacturer's representative in the UK is based in Newport, which is only about half an hours drive from me.
The pot is approximately 5cm high by 5cm wide, and is rounded in shape. The lid is approximately 5cm wide, is green in colour and has the Play Doh logo written on the lid. The lid has an indent in it which measures approximately 4cm by 4cm.
What makes this Play Doh stand out from the rest is that it comes with a plastic 'Shrek' figurine, which fits into the indent on the lid. As Gareth likes the Shrek films, I thought this would appeal to him. The base of Shrek can be used as a stamp, as it has a picture of Shrek's face on it, and it does come out well. The Shrek figure stands at a height of 7cm and is 5cm wide.
~~ The Product ~~
Upon opening the pot you are met with a tub full of green Play Doh, probably a little bit darker than the colour Shrek is in the film. To be fair, the pot is full almost to the brim with the Play Doh.
The smell on the Play Doh is quite strong and I cannot really describe what it smells like or reminds me of. All I can say is that the smell hasn't changed since I used to play with it as a child.
The Play Doh comes out of the tub with the greatest of ease, which I was surprised at. I was expecting to have to get my fingers in the tub to try and prise it out.
The Play Doh is very easy to manipulate into shapes. It is easy to roll out with a rolling pin, or to squash with your hand - whichever is the most fun for you. It is brilliant for using different types of cutters with and making a variety of shapes.
When I play with this with my son, we normally have it out of the tub for about thirty to forty five minutes. At the end of this time it is still as soft to use as when we first opened the tub. It does not go hard like I expected it to, although if you leave it out of the tub for hours and don't use it, then I expect it will go hard.
The Shrek figure is also very good. It is bright and colourful (well as colourful as it was in the films!). It is very light for children to pick up so they can use the stamp with ease on their own, although they do have to apply a small amount of pressure for a decent imprint, but my son managed it without any problem or help from me.
~~ My Opinion ~~
I found this to be a really good product and original, insomuch that I had not seen it on sale before with a stamping figure attached.
My son did find it quite difficult to take the lid off the first time he went to use it, and in the end he gave up and passed it to me to open. I also found the lid stiff, but this was just because it had never been opened before. He has never had any problems with it since.
He enjoys using this on his own or using it with me or his dad.
He can roll it, use cutters to make shapes and cuts bits off it without any help from me.
Because the tub is small and therefore the contents and stamp small, it is ideal for small hands.
The Doh stays soft when using it and I have never had any problems with it.
I consider this to be an excellent product. It allows good interaction with parent and child. For example me and my son spend ages together rolling it out and making different shapes.
It also allows a child to play on their own and helps them develop their imagination. For example my son will happily play with it on his own and then show me the monster he had made, or the tea he has made for daddy.
I find that it also encourages children to learn and understand the concept of sharing. For example, when I play with this with my son, he gives me some Doh and cutters to play with and then he keeps some for himself.
I also use this as a learning tool with him. For example recognition of shapes (can you pass me the tree shaped cutter) and counting shapes (how many trees have we made so far).
~~ Would I recommend ~~
Most definitely yes. This is a fun product, which is easy to use and reasonably priced. Children think they are having a great time playing with it, but sometimes they are actually going through a learning process (as I mentioned above) by using it.
Would recommend this product to anyone with young children.
The one disadvantage of this (which I have just discovered) is that is can stick to the bottom of your shoes!!!
~~ Other Useful Information ~~
The product is made by Hasbro and the representative in the United Kingdom is; Hasbro UK Ltd Caswell Way Newport Gwent NP19 4YH
Telephone number; 00800 22427276
It does state that the product is suitable for children aged three years of age upwards. My son is three this month and he had it for Christmas and he was fine using it, although I have never left him unsupervised playing with it and would not recommend doing so.
Another point to note is that the product does contain wheat.~~ Thanks for taking the time to read my review, Cath. ~~
Advantages: Lots of other sets to add to it. Wheeled trolly bag. Disadvantages: Once colours are mixed they're a nightmare to seperate.
...a little about Play Doh-
Play-Doh was invented by Noah McVicker and Joseph McVicker in 1956 and awarded U.S. Patent 3,167,440 in 1965. One of many common products invented by accident, it was meant as a wallpaper cleaner. It was marketed by toy manufacturer Rainbow Crafts, and first sold at the Woodward & Lothrop department store in Washington, D.C.
Play-Doh, is a commercial modeling compound, like a salt dough which is similar in feel to bread ... ...in a sealed container Play-Doh remains soft, but when left out in the air it will go hard. It will crack once hard and isnt any good for projects you wish to keep. if your play doh starts to go hard you can add water to it "one drop at a time" to restore its softness.
The Product-
The packaging for the set is a clear plastic zip up travel case, like a suitcase/luggage for travelling. it has a yellow extendable plastic handle as well as a fabric ...

...Upon hearing that Play-Doh was Jack's favourite thing to do at the crèche I popped straight down to my local Woolworth's to pick up a tub or two. I assumed the age range on the Play-Doh was 3+ but surprisingly on the single tubs, it states 2+. This age range is not that far away from Jack's actual age, which reassured me more that he would get lots of fun from playing with it. Play-Doh is sold in a variety of different colours and buying a single ... ...dog buying white and brown Play-Doh would be perfect. There are also a wide verity of accessories that are available from the Play-Doh range. Of course these make Play-Doh a more expensive creative toy to get but nonetheless add to the fun that can be brought about by playing with the Doh. Jack loves to use the stuff now and finds nothing more fun that squeezing it through his fists or rolling it out into worm shapes. The possibilities for play are ...

...buy him (and myself!) some Play-Doh along with all the accessories and tools and start playing! In case you have never handled Play-Doh before, let me give you a short description. However, I've seen a few copy cat products on the market which have turned out to be of inferior quality. One brand that I wouldn't recommend in particular is Kid's Dough by Kid's Toys. I bought a pack of six pots the other day in a factory outlet store and two of them were so sticky that I had to throw them away. The other four pots are usable but not nearly as good as Play-Doh or ...

Playdoh
Playdoh a non-toxic pliable reusable modelling compound was first made by rainbow crafts in 1956.It was produced in Cincinnati America. I am not sure when it was introduced to England. Playdoh is now made by Hasbro.
Playdoh at this time was only available in white (I bet it got dirty pretty quick.) Other colours were introduced a year later.
Playdoh comes in tubs in an assortment of colours, red, green, and blue, white, yellow.
Tubs are ... ...2oz, 1oz. I have seen them in shops sold singly and in sets.
Play doh make a lot of cutters to use with the playdoh
Sets are available with doh and cutters. There is a Disney snow white set this contains 2 tubs of dough and cutters of the characters from snow white. A set including the characters from the lion king is also available.
If you look in the site mailorderexpress.co.uk there are many sets available to buy.
A set that I think looks ...

Advantages: Kids are quiet for ages, they get creative. Disadvantages: Kids are quiet for ages cos they're getting creative mashing into the carpet!
I first encountered play-doh when i was working as a nursery nurse, the kids were mashing it, cutting it, melding into some sort of rocket ship, tower, phallic shape, ok it looked like fun so having an inner child (who only usually comes out after a few bevvys) i decided to give it a go.
Most adults spend hours dribbling over play-doh like a kitten massages a blanket, they sit with their tongues lolling to the side of their mouths trying to build ... ...they never got to mash play-doh but whatever, they would just have to play with it when they were at playschool or at a friends, i am that mean! Just call me bad mummy!!!!
It was Olivia's birthday some horrible friend of mine decided to buy her a pot of play-doh, i am ashamed to say it was given away, i generally hate the stuff that bad, when the top is peeled off all i want to do is throw-up, the smell is awful, i never knew that that was the tip ...

Advantages: Keep the kids occupied Disadvantages: None
I used to love playing with play-doh as a kid. I had a barbers shop with figurines that you filled with play-doh, sat on the barbers chair, pressed the button and watched their hair grow (play-doh was shoved through the little holes in their heads). It came with modelling tools so you could create different hair styles and plastic scissors too!
So I was thrilled when my god-daughter wanted me to play 'play-doh' with her.
As the name suggests the pots of play-doh are filled with brightly coloured play-doh and I can only assume the reason they call it a mountain of colour is because they are stacked in the shape of a triangle in the box. So if you are expecting a mountain cast then you will be disappointed!
We had so much fun making butterflies and cars from the cutters and moulds.
It was very easy to pack/clean away too and won ...
Advantages: Simple for younger children Disadvantages: Difficult to clean some of the tools that comes with it
I bought this play -doh set for my son for his second birthday. The box actually says for 3 years plus, but I have found no toys that would keep my 2 year amused that are designed for his age group. So plumped for buying him the doggy doctor as it looked a lot simpler than some of the other play -doh sets.
So what do you get in the set?
You get 4 tubs of playdoh (pink , white, green and yellow). The set I bought was on speacial offer and came with another 4 tubs attched so 8 in total.
Also in the set you get a syringe for squirting the play-doh into the moulds, a set of tweezers, a mould of a plaster and then the dog itself that has several mouls on it.
The head of the dog is detachable, you place the play-doh in and replace onto the body as you push the head on to the body in squeezes the play-doh out through the dogs mouth ...
Advantages: An unusual set thats cheap! Disadvantages: None!!!
The product I will now review is the "play-doh, make and play stage show".
This is an unusual set purchased by my daughter from Asda's half price toy sale, which is currently running.
The set comprises of a "stage", which is a purple open sided dome, designed to look like a stage which holds a neon blue light at the top, which is said to bring out the luminous colours in the play-doh.
The neon light is controlled by a button under the play-doh sign, which is housed dead centre of the stage.
The stage is powered by three AAA batteries which are included in the set.
Inside the stage there is a smaller Perspex's dome, with a base very similar looking to a sea bed, rocks, seaweed and all!
Also attached to the inside part of the base is a small "stump", rounded at the top, this is to be used to push the play-doh through a small ...
