You might think being a Mummy of 3 that I would be a dab hand at choosing Christmas gifts for babies, sadly not so, I had no idea what to buy for Jack this Christmas and was struggling to make suggestions for relatives who were constantly asking what they could buy. It was on a trip to Toys R Us to pick up gifts for the older children when I spotted the Lullaby Gloworm, initially I picked it up reminiscing about the Gloworm toys of my childhood but when I pressed the tummy and it started to play it's tune Jack started to immediately settle and listen to the song, it would seem he had chosen a toy for himself and so the Gloworm was put on his list.

The fabric of the body, arms and top is very soft, and despite the inner mechanics and plastic face he is lovely to give a big squish!

There are 6 different lullabies in total each sweet and delicate and perfectly soothing for an unsettled baby, the sound isn't as crisp as I'd like and does sound a little mechanical, not that that bothers Jack, but the tunes are still lovely to listen to.

The toy requires 3AA batteries, which are supplied, but the compartment is well within the worm's body and there is no worry that baby will be able to open up the inners and remove the batteries. They seem to last well as the lullabies are quite short, meaning they aren't constantly being drained, unless of course you have a very enthusiastic baby! The fabric of the worm is surface clean only and the worm cannot be washed in the machine due to it's electronic nature, this is really the only downfall of the worm, being a baby item, and one designed for them to sleep with, the toy is at risk of being chewed, dribbled, vomited....even pooped on if he's unlucky so it would be good to be able to give it a more thorough clean if required.

The worm is suitable from birth and is very well made with all the seams and stitches being very strong, it seems very durable and would stand up to slightly older babies and toddlers too. We let jack have the worm early, after all he's too young to really understand Christmas this year, what with him being 5 months old and all, and I want him to get the most out of his toys. He really seems to love the Gloworm and cuddles it enthusiastically, occasionally he manages to set off the lullaby but usually it is me who helps with that part, the tunes always seem to soothe him and he'll go quiet to listen to them, they aren't so long though that he'll fall asleep to them, which is good as I don't want him reliant on a toy to fall asleep.

The Gloworm is available from most toy stores, I've seen it in Argos, Toys R Us and The Entertainer, you can also find them on Ebay and Amazon with a RRP of £7.99, which to me is more then a fair price to pay. It's a lovely item for babies and young children, just the right size for your little one to snuggle at night and wonderfully made. If you're after something slightly larger then you could try the Fisher Price sea horse which is much along the same lines but the Gloworm is just perfect for my little Jack.
