A lot of the books I tend to read are true stories, most of which tend to upset me when I am reading them but nonetheless i still keep buying more and more true stories to read. One book in particular which I read recently upset me a great deal and it was pretty hard to read the book without feeling disgusted and sick. This book was called Please Daddy No which was written by Stuart Howarth – I think that by the name of the book you get a rough idea that this book is going to be quite a sad and disturbing book which will bring most of us to tears – admittedly this has to be one of the saddest and most horrific books I have read in a long time. The book is written by Stuart Howarth – and the story is all about his life the abuse he suffered and how it affected his life right up to adulthood.
The book takes us way back to when Stuart was a little boy aged 5 and this is when the abuse started – Stuart lived on a council estate in Manchester with his mother and father and his siblings Shirley and Christine; Shirley is the eldest sibling and is disabled and confined to a wheelchair 24/7. Stuarts upbringing in the Manchester Council estate wasn’t the best, he and his sisters lived in a dirty house with his mother and fathers dog’s – Stuart describes the house as being really filthy and constantly smelling of cigarette smoke, damp and dogs. As well as living in a filthy house Stuart is often starving as there is no food in the house to eat and he is often sent out begging for money or food etc from his neighbours. This isn’t all Stuart has to deal with as he is often beat up by his father for nothing at all and by the way Stuart describes the beatings it is hard to believe that a small child of 5 years old would be able to survive them. The first 3-4 chapters in the book describing Stuarts earlier life and the mental and physical abuse he suffered from his father was horrifying however the chapters which followed into his teens and his adult life were much more upsetting and it was these chapters which had me in tears - as I couldn’t imagine how he managed to suffer in silence all those years without telling anyone. I actually thought this book was faitly similar to that of a `Child Called It” by David Peltzer in the beginning but unlike a child called it Please Daddy No got worse throughout and more and more sickening and horrifying things kept happening to poor Stuart. I really felt for Stuart in this book – I think I felt for him more as he was 5 years old when the abuse started on him and having a son myself whom is nearly 7 I couldn’t possibly imagine any child having to go through the kind of torture Stuart had to under go. I would fight heaven and earth to keep my child safe from harm and protect him as much as I can – but as Stuart didn’t speak out about his abuse his mother was unaware of what was happening to him. In the book you get the idea that Stuart thought what was happening to him was normal and that it occurred in every family; but this want the case what was happening to him was sick and horrific and no child should have to undergo this no matter how old they are and wither they are a boy or a girl. Most of the books you read about child abuse are often about female victims but this book just goes to show that boys go through the same as girls when they are being abuse. Most of the sexual abuse books I have read it has often been a member of the family whom abuses the child; more often than not people often get the impression that it is strangers whom lure their prey – whilst this is still very true that people groom and lure their victims it is more often a family member who will commit the abuse wither this be the mother, father, aunt or uncle even grandparents. In Stuarts case it was his Step Father whom abused him – the one person he thought cared and loved him and someone you would expect to protect their child from harm but as it goes his step father was sick and twisted. Even although this book was upsetting to read I did enjoy reading it as Stuart Howarth wrote the book in a very simple way. Even although the book was written in a very simple way there is also alot of descriptive chapters which would make you think you were there living the horrific nightmare with Stuart. He goes into so much detail describing some of the places he went and what he did or what was done to him. He describes smells, scents etc that you could imagine yourself that you were there.
I think that Stuart Howarth is a very brave man to have shared his story with us all and tell us all about his childhood nightmare which continued into his adult life. I can’t imagine going through what Stuart did, but I think that he is a survivor and a very brave and courageous man who shared a horrific story with us. He gave a very balanced and honest story from childhood into adulthood – as the book is about Stuarts life up until 2006 I don’t want to say too much here which will ruin the book for anyone but all I can say is that Stuart is a complete survivor and I take my hat off to him for making the most of his life despite what he was put through.

Review of Please, Daddy, No: A Boy Betrayed - Stuart Howarth
Advantages: You must read the book to decide ! Disadvantages: Graphic portrayal of abuse
...are all that desperate!
Please, Daddy, No..is a true story written by a guy named Stuart Howarth. As you may have guessed by the title this book is not for the faint hearted. It truly is a gruesome and harrowing account of child abuse, sexual, mental and physical. I would not recommend that you read it if you are not keen on the subject matter.
The story is based in a council estate in Manchester. Stuart has two sisters, Christine and Shirley. ... ...spina bifid. The there is Stuart and his Mother. David is alleged to be Stuarts father but Shirl and Christine are of differing parentage. To be frank this is possibly the worst thing for Stuart to know.
Living ina dingy, rotten filthy house with his entire family and some mangy dogs. He is still proud that he has a Father. Not many of the other kids on the estate do. And he is proud and wants to do anything to please the main figure of love and ...

Advantages: A great read Disadvantages: A bit to graphic
I was recently given this book to read by a family member, and to be honest when I asked her what the story was about I was quite dubious as to whether I wanted to read it or not as this is not the type of story I would personally go for myself. I must say though that once I started reading I could not put it down and had completed it in two days.
This book has twenty chapters, an acknowledements page and an Introduction which goes :
" There are ... ...abuse on a daily basis. You can turn a blind eye and consider this too nasty to read about, or you can take a courageous step forward and share a few moments from my world. We can only bring about change by doing something postitve and being prepared to listen. This is my story."
The book as a whole, is a mans biography of how he spent his childhood being abused both mentally and sexually by his step father.
All he wants is for his father to love ...

Advantages: Real life content makes the book all the more moving Disadvantages: Some of the content is hard to read through and highly emotional
This book was without doubt the most emotionally moving read I've ever experienced. I couldn't put it down and finished it within 3 days. It was tough going in some places but gave me such insight to the suffering that children can go through, and then the suffering that can befall them as adults. The book takes us through the life of Stuart Howarth, from a small boy of 3 years old right up to adult hood: from his mental and sexual abuse as a child, ... ...murder of his step-father and abuser.
I did think at the beginning I wouldn't be able to stick it out, but I'm so glad I did as it tested not only my strength of character, but has also inspired me to try and do something to change the lives of children suffering abuse - something I've wanted to do for a long time and now Stuart has given me that push I needed. There is some extremely graphic descriptions of abuse in the first half of this book, ...

Manufacturer's product description
Stuart just wanted his father to love him, but he was made to believe he was too naughty to be loved. Finally, David Howarth was sent to prison for abusing Stuart's young sisters. Nobody knew the truth about Stuart's abuse until one fateful day when his father tried it again and Stuart fought back in the only way he knew how. Stuart Howarth spent the first thirty years of his life in mental and physical hell. After years of emotional torment and despair, at the age of 32 Stuart felt an overwhelming urge to see his father (who he now knew was actually his stepfather), then living in Wales. Seeking reconciliation, Stuart was only to be met by the same old abusive man. The rage, pain and confusion boiled over in Stuart and he fought back, killing his stepfather. When Stuart's story came to light in the courtroom, it was so terrible that he received the minimum possible sentence for his crime and only served thirteen months in Strangeways prison in Manchester. But while in prison, the cruel system compounded the crimes of his evil abuser, and he suffered at the hands of the prison guards. What happened to him during those months led to him suing the Home Office and Strangeways on his release and winning his case. This is the story of a sweet-natured boy who grew into a brave young man and refused to allow himself to be a victim any longer. From the AuthorChild Abuse has become a part of everyday life because we choose to ignore it - it is too nasty to even consider that it happens. The truth is, it happens and in order to learn we must first of all listen to survivors stories. Not only will it educate society, it will heal the survivor. Every mother and father has a duty to protect and educate their children so that they can feel safe in todays world. Survivors - every day we are sad, down, lonely, shameful, guilty, depressed or suicidal - the abuser wins!Break free look forward not back and be sure in your heart that you are never alone. My love, thoughts and prayers are with the still suffering and may your God be with you x See all Product Description
