Advantages: Fast, reliable, most formats supported great support and regular firmware updates. Disadvantages: Supports CD-G copy/writting but has no CD-G Player, supports -R DL but there are no disks available...
It would have saved a lot of time if you visited plextors website for a true account of the features and formats supported by this trully superdrive. As well as software bundled.
If not Goggle Plextor and away you go...
I got the retail package since I wanted the black bezel (quite easy to change and should be done with great care). So much for the bundled software since I have all the full retail version of the Usual titles I.E. Nero, Ulead Videostudio, etc... If you need it to start up then it is a very complete package.
As easy to install as 1, 2 done....
One great addition is the Plextools professional which provides a better access to all the feature on the drive, like secure rec, and CD-G burn, Amongst others, not so much that I use them anyway but there if you are after those functions and are a little adventurous ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: somewhat helpful Review of Plextor PX-716A
Advantages: Specification/features, Quality, Performance, Best DAE. Disadvantages: SCSI interface still more expensive than IDE.
. They also have an identical IDE (Atapi) model, PX-W1210A and the lastest offering using this interface is the Plextor 24/10/40S. The market is really hotting up at the moment with the likes of Ricoh MP9200A (20/10/40, DVD 12xRead), Sanyo CRD-BP1500P (24/10/40), TDK Cyclone (20/10/40), Yamaha CRW2200E (20/10/40). The current speed kings are all IDE CD writers, so why did I buy a SCSI model when it is slower?
There should be no real difference to the end-user between IDE and SCSI CD writers so my choice to choose SCSI was a personal one. I would have bought the Plextor 24/10/40S, but I have too many IDE devices so I try to avoid it if possible. I have a DVD-ROM drive and 4 harddisks totalling 5 IDE devices! I had 6 until recently and I can have up 8 in total as I have a UDMA66 Controller. I felt that my IDE bus could easily get bogged ...
Advantages: Looks Nice Disadvantages: Doesn't work
Hi,
Purchased this Plextor 708a 8x DVD writer + and - format from Silicon Group about two months ago.
I was so pleased I got this drive as it was suppsed to be one of the best - Plextor quality - ha ha.
Anyway, from the day i got it there was a problem. Every burn had rings on the written side. I thought it was bad media, so after purchasing many brands from cheapo to very expensive it was still doing it.
I contacted Plextor support and there excuse was cheap media, or faulty media.
I thought No this is not right. I then began to think it was my PC - so after hauling it all out and taking it to my dads pc to try it burned these rings on his !! Ding Ding - its not my machine it the writer thats faulty.
I then visited some forums online too see if there was a problem, mamy people say that it required a firmware update ...
