“Ahaar, Jim lad, get thee down to Ye Old Inn on Southside Street and get thee a swallee, here’s a new whole penny, drink all the gin you can because in the morn we set sail for the Tropics”

I hold in my hand an almost empty bottle, a bottle of antiquarian design. I look at the cork stopper in my other hand and place it home. Next a splash of tonic is added to the hearty measure of spirit and ice that lies in my heavy crystal glass. With the deftness of a surgeon I slice two pieces of lime. One is squeezed into the glass’s contents whilst the other is thrown in with gay abandon.

Now the pleasure, lifting the glass to my lips I savour the perfume, the juniper berry, lime and tonic, what a combination. Without hesitation I take a large sip, swirl it around my mouth and swallow. Smooth is the word that best describes the sensation, unfortunately smooth is a word that just does not go far enough.

Plymouth Gin, a product established in 1793 a recipe established as a favourite then and maintained to this day. Produced at Black Friars Distillery in the Barbican area of Plymouth where surprisingly a monastery once stood. At a strength belying its smoothness of 42% by volume, be warned, tread carefully or it could be the mothers ruination of you.

It contains juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, orrisroot and cardamom pod. So perhaps as I love spicy food it was not a surprise for me to attach such a fondness to this bevy.

It is human to err, as it is to compare. In comparison I must say that Plymouth is smoother, more fragrant and tastier that Gordons, it rates highly with Bombay Sapphire and is better tasting than Tanquery, but never as strong. Local Supermarket brands in comparison taste like cat’s piss!

If you are a Gin drinker I suggest you give it a swirl but please do not forget the lime.

Cost = approx £14 per 70cl.

Cheers
