Handfast - Scottish poetry not just for weddings
Review of Handfast: Scottish Poems for Weddings and Affirmations - Lizzie MacGregor by
jemima.peter
Advantages: Poignant Scottish poetry
Disadvantages: Too short?
Although some may be put off by the 'Scottish' reference in the title, if you have any love for poetry at all, give this little book a chance, and if you haven't been touched by any of the poems by the end of the book, ask for your money back.
At only 64 pages, the book isn't uncommonly short for a poetry anthology, in fact more than this would probably have you in tears. Although the author is listed here as Lizzie MacGregor, there are many other ... ...Liz Lochhead. Lochhead makes several suggestions for use of the poetry, but it's clear right from the beginning that, Scots or not, this is a collection of poems for the celebration of love. There are poems from the well-known authors you'd expect in a volume of Scottish poetry (e.g. Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson) and also contemporary Scots poets - Sheena Blackhall's 'Haunfast' is particularly appropriate as the first poem in a book devoted ...

An excellent play - Crucible - themes, ideas
Review of The Crucible: A Play in Four Acts (Penguin Modern Classics) - Arthur Miller by
CChurch
Advantages: Powerful, gripping
Disadvantages: not 100% historically accurate.
...Monroe) set in 1692 during the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. The play begins with Reverend Parris praying for his daughter, Betty, who is lying inert on a bed. The circumstances surrounding how Betty ends up in an unresponsive state becomes a major theme and discussing point of the play. However, Miller has other central themes and key ideas, for example, reputation and how it alters certain character's behaviour. To convey this, Miller uses ... ...be considered by readers of the play as John Proctor and Abigail Williams. John Proctor is married to Eilzabeth/Goody Proctor and yet, while she was ill for a period of time, had an affair with the manipulating temptress that is Abigail Williams.
From the play (although it is not actually part of any of the four Acts) we deduct that Abigail, Betty and several other young girls of the village were dancing in the woods outside the village; it is believed ...

The first Mrs Rochester
Review of Wide Sargasso Sea (Penguin Modern Classics) - Jean Rhys by
ring_of_roses
Advantages: Excellent, engaging story
Disadvantages: Sometimes challenging, hard to understand if you haven't read Jane Eyre
...read previously and loved), and Wide Sargasso Sea. I felt uneasy about "add ons" to books. For one thing, it was not written by Charlotte Bronte, so I felt this was just ripping off her idea to make money. How wrong I was. Despite being billed as a prequel to Jane Eyre, I would read Bronte's novel first as otherwise the events and characters in WSS may seem irrelevant and confusing. This book costs £5.99 - £8.99 depending on edition. PLOT
The novel ... ...Creole girl - meaning that she is born in the Caribbean but is white. The first part describes Antoinette childhood and pre-Rochester years.
