Not just English Patient
Review of The Cinnamon Peeler - Michael Ondaatje by neofran

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

I read The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje before I saw the movie. Then I picked up the book of poems called The Cinnamon Peeler. I am now forever hooked on this man as both a novelist and a poet. It is a shame that most of his other work is overshadowed by The English Patient and that he is not recognised for being a great POET as well. The poem entitled The Cinnamon Peeler is by far the my favourite poem and ends with perhaps the most memorable ... Read review

No Kidding, This Book is FABULOUS
Review of The Collected Works of Billy the Kid - Michael Ondaatje by TheChocolateLady

Advantages: Totally new type of book, fascinating, intelligent, beautiful and amazing
Disadvantages: A bit short, but that only means you can read it again and again and again...

...by Michael Ondaatje (author of The English Patient) is a unique hybrid of poetry and prose, mixed with both historical fact and fiction based on the true life story of the famous American outlaw William Bonney, who was better known as “Billy the Kid”. Already from this little bit of information, you can tell that this is not a book that follows any usual format or structure. I really can’t describe the “plot” of this book, because there is no real ...
...vicious and fascinating personality from the pages of American folklore and history. Ondaatje has basically put himself into Mr. Bonney’s shoes and from inside the mind of this infamous criminal, tried to give us a totally different view of who this man really was. We are exposed to Bonney the poet who looks at the crimes he’s committed almost as works of art. We are introduced to Bonney the lover, who is both gentle and harsh with his prostitute ... An excellent play - Crucible - themes, ideas
Review of The Crucible: A Play in Four Acts (Penguin Modern Classics) - Arthur Miller by CChurch

Advantages: Powerful, gripping
Disadvantages: not 100% historically accurate.

...Monroe) set in 1692 during the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. The play begins with Reverend Parris praying for his daughter, Betty, who is lying inert on a bed. The circumstances surrounding how Betty ends up in an unresponsive state becomes a major theme and discussing point of the play. However, Miller has other central themes and key ideas, for example, reputation and how it alters certain character's behaviour. To convey this, Miller uses ...
...be considered by readers of the play as John Proctor and Abigail Williams. John Proctor is married to Eilzabeth/Goody Proctor and yet, while she was ill for a period of time, had an affair with the manipulating temptress that is Abigail Williams. From the play (although it is not actually part of any of the four Acts) we deduct that Abigail, Betty and several other young girls of the village were dancing in the woods outside the village; it is believed ... The first Mrs Rochester
Review of Wide Sargasso Sea (Penguin Modern Classics) - Jean Rhys by ring_of_roses

Advantages: Excellent, engaging story
Disadvantages: Sometimes challenging, hard to understand if you haven't read Jane Eyre

...read previously and loved), and Wide Sargasso Sea. I felt uneasy about "add ons" to books. For one thing, it was not written by Charlotte Bronte, so I felt this was just ripping off her idea to make money. How wrong I was. Despite being billed as a prequel to Jane Eyre, I would read Bronte's novel first as otherwise the events and characters in WSS may seem irrelevant and confusing. This book costs £5.99 - £8.99 depending on edition. PLOT The novel ...
