**On selected poems in "Seeing Things"**
Most of Seamus Heaney's poems wrote in 'simple and unadorned diction' (Walt Whitman's term). This kind of poetry tends to avoid complicated symbols and allegories. Instead, rhythm with strong accent becomes an emphasis thing.
The first poem on the book, The Journey Back, shows us about the term simple and unadorned diction above:

Heaney's exploration of grief in Mid-term Break
Advantages: Very rich. Disadvantages: A bit hard-going!
My favorite poem by Seamus Heaney is Mid-term Break, and i am particularly captivated by the way he explores grief.
In the 1950's Seamus Heaney's brother, who was four at the time, was hit and killed by a car. Seamus was at boarding school at the time and recalls to us what happened immediately after the accident.
To start with Heaney begins by describing how he sat in the sick-bay waiting for some-one to come and pick him up. Although he is in ... ...sitting there bored waiting to be driven home to see his dead brother. The bells he refer to - q. "…Counting bells knelling classes to a close." Are solemn like funeral bells, forming the association already, this early on in his poem with something of that nature, but to me are symbolic of the rest of the world getting on with their lives, which perhaps he is thinking in retrospect, is what he should have done perhaps sooner. He is driven home at ...

Beautiful
Advantages: Strong yet simple messages Disadvantages: May be hard to understand these messages fully for younger readers
Beautiful poems, with both simple and complex meanings and I definitely recommend it to anyone who appreciates poetry or literature. After studying Heaney's poetry for GCSE, and loving it, I personally went to Heaney's birthplace in Ireland, and now all his poems have an even more vivid meaning to me.
My 2 favourites - 'Death of a Naturalist' and 'Digging'
'Death of a Naturalist' tells of a young boy's fascination with nature, presented through ... ...and 'sweltering'. Heaney uses imagery and phonology to great effect, and contrasts the boy's emotions to those of the reader. In the 2nd stanza, we return to the pond scene, but now the narrator - presumably Heaney - is terrified by the violent, grotesque nature of frogs, contrasting his earlier love for frogspawn. 'Death of a Naturalist' reflects growing up, and how children lose their childhood fancies as they mature. 'Digging' tells of a man - ...

Beowulf
Advantages: short and interesting Disadvantages: short
...to terrorize the population and Beowulf goes off to fight it. He only just manages to slay the dragon but he dies of his wounds and enters the myths and legends of his people.
We know about the book completely by chance as it is only on one piece of manuscript, which only just survived a fire in the 18th century. It has then been translated, transliterated, taught and adapted so that it is know a well known Anglo - Saxon classic.
Even though an ...

Ireland's Finest
Advantages: a well selected collection of poetic verse Disadvantages: difficult to engage with on first read.
As a listed A level curriculem author , this particular collection is extremely useful for study. It contains an excellent selecton of his works, that span the changes in his writing style. Including his famous poem 'death of a naturalist' the reader is introduced to one of Irelands greatest poets with one of my favourite poems of all time. For love of nature and its rythms, it's cruelties and victories the themes of our human questions about life, ... ...adore the use of the english laguage simply for its phonetic interplay, Heaney explores the links between his native gaelic and the english tongues. A treasure to keep, I would recommend this boook to any student of language, literature or poetry and to the layman would further recommend the purchase of a study guide to enhance the reading pleasure. ...
