Review of Best Poems of the Bronte Sisters - Dover Thrift Editions by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: An different aspect to the Bronte sisters
Disadvantages: All too short

Best Poems of the Bronte Sisters by Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte and Charlotte Bronte I would hazard a guess that everyone reading this review has heard of one or all of the Bronte sisters. They are better known of course for their novels including Wuthering Heights, Agnes Grey and Jane Eyre. These multi talented sisters Emily, Anne and Charlotte, as well as writing their famous and widely read novels, also wrote poetry. In this small anthology, “Best ...
...with examples of their work. Published by Dover Publications on April 1st 1997 and edited by Candace Ward. The book contains 47 poems in total; 23 of Emily’s, 14 of Anne’s and 10 of Charlotte’s. It is however not the first analogy of poems by the sisters to be published. History of the Bronte Sister’s Poetry Emily and Anne invented their make-believe world of Gondal writing poems and stories to entertain themselves and each other. Charlotte inadvertently ... Lament for a lost poet
Review of Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas 1934-1952 - Dylan Thomas by Alican

Advantages: Very deep, some moving poems
Disadvantages: Can take a while to get into it

Just to make it clear form the start, I am reviewing the 'Everyman's Poetry' book which contains works by Thomas from between 1931 and 1952. I was first introduced to Dylan Thomas properly by my English teacher as we have had to study his poetry for my course. I had heard of him before but it had never really crossed my mind to actually read any of his work, mostly due to my laziness. Now however, I am glad I was introduced to Thomas' work. At first ...
...have studied more and more, I feel that I have become more aware of how he presents his ideas and I would certainly encourage any reader struggling with his works to persevere, as it really does get easier and a lot more interesting! The Book --------------------------------- This 112 page edition of the book not only contains 62 of Thomas' best known and best loved poems, but also a note on the author and editor, a timeline of Thomas' life, a ... ...at www.homesteads.com/aardvaarkcreative and I would recommend a visit to this little known site. Fat-Free Poetry made me laugh and made me want to cry - for an unknown poet I was unbelieveably impressed. I hope we all get a chance to see more of this obviously talented man. ... Read review

Letters to Sylvia
Review of Birthday Letters - Ted Hughes by cora_95

Advantages: fantastic use of language
Disadvantages: sometimes hard going to read.

I bought this book several years ago and have been unable to put it down since! It is an honest and fascinating account of Ted Hughes ultimately tragic relationship with the American Poet Sylvia Plath. The couple met at Cambridge University in 1956 and married shortly after. However, their marriage was turbulent and despite having two children together, they broke up in 1962. A year later Sylvia committed suicide. Ted Hughes refused to comment on ...
...publication of this book in 1998 and for that he was accused of being a heartless, callous husband. However one only has to read it to realise that Hughes loved Sylvia very much. I highly recommend reading "18 Rugby Street" and "Life after death" from this collection if you don't read any others! A beautifully written book. ... Read review

An excellent play - Crucible - themes, ideas
Review of The Crucible: A Play in Four Acts (Penguin Modern Classics) - Arthur Miller by CChurch

Advantages: Powerful, gripping
Disadvantages: not 100% historically accurate.

...Monroe) set in 1692 during the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. The play begins with Reverend Parris praying for his daughter, Betty, who is lying inert on a bed. The circumstances surrounding how Betty ends up in an unresponsive state becomes a major theme and discussing point of the play. However, Miller has other central themes and key ideas, for example, reputation and how it alters certain character's behaviour. To convey this, Miller uses ...
...be considered by readers of the play as John Proctor and Abigail Williams. John Proctor is married to Eilzabeth/Goody Proctor and yet, while she was ill for a period of time, had an affair with the manipulating temptress that is Abigail Williams. From the play (although it is not actually part of any of the four Acts) we deduct that Abigail, Betty and several other young girls of the village were dancing in the woods outside the village; it is believed ...
