Since that accident I have took more attention to a poisonous plants in my garden, but as I have been reading books about them I’ve find out that I can bee surrounded by poisonous plants in my own home. However, human’s death from plant poisonous in Great Brittan is low - the NCP records estimates that one or two people die each year. But what surprise me more that the record shows that about 5000 people a year become ill thought contact with those plants. However the treatment is available but often delayed because doctors are unaware of what poison was.
If you suspected poisoning by those plants you should contact the medical assistance immediately and explain them what you were doing and what plants was-to get the help quicker. Bearing in mind that prevention is better then cure, infants and small children should be kept away from colourful berries, mushrooms and house plants and taught that what birds and animals eat are not necessary harmless to them. Parts of plants, such as seeds, bulbs should be labelled careful when sorting. You can still enjoy growing these plants for their beauty and colour and it is not necessary to remove them from the garden altogether just take a notice of them.
Those plants can cause all sorts all rashes, blisters, stomach pains , vomiting, burning, diarrhea, muscle twitches, paralysis, digestive upset, nervous excitement , kidney disorders, convulsions, coma, breathing difficulties.and if consumed in large dose can cause death. Most of the poisonous elements in plants are either alkaloid or glucosidal in form - those are most dangerous, but there are volatile oils or resinous substances, all of which will affect the living cell when consumed.
Those plants can be putt in 5 mini categories:
flowering garden plants
Monkshood (aconitum napellus) - all parts of the plant contain alkaloids.
autumn crocus (colchicum autumnaie) - alkaloids are in the bulbs.
lily of the valley (convallaria majalis) - all parts of the plant contain cardiac glycosides.
larkspur (delphinium ajacis) - the young plants and seeds are contain alkaloids.
Christmas rose (hellebores Niger) -all the parts of the plant contain glycosides.
iris (iris versicolor) - glycosides are in the bulbs.
lupine (lupines) - all parts of the plant contains alkaloids.
narcissus (narcissus) - alkaloids are in the bulbs
Aconitum (Aconitum) - the poison (aconite) is in the seeds pods and roots.
vegetable plants
Rhubarb (rheum rhaponticum) - solube oxalates are in the leaf blades.
potato (solanum tuberosum) - glycoalkanoid is in the foliage and green-tinged tubers.
tomato (solanum lycopersicon) alkaloid is in foliage and vines.
shrubs and trees
broom (cytisus) - alkaloids are in the seeds.
mezereon (daphne mezereum) - glycoside are in the bark and berries.
laburnum (laburnum anagyroides) -alkaloid is in the all parts of the plant.
cherry laurel (prenus laurocerasus) - cyan genetic glycosides are in the leaves and kernels of fruit.
rhododendron (rhododendron species) - glycoside are in the leaves and flowers.
yew (taxus baccata) - alkaloids is in the leaves and seeds.
Azelea (azalea) - glycoside is in all parts of the plant.
weeds and hedgerow plants
deadly nightshade (atropa belladonna) - alkaloids is in the all parts of the plant.
white bryony (bryonia dioica) - glycoside are in the roots and berries.
thorn apple (daturastramonium) - alkaloids are in all parts of the plant.
spurges (euphorbia) - volatile oils are in all parts of the plant.
privet (ligature vulgaris) -glycoside is in the berries and leaves.
black Byron (tamus communis) -the poison is in the roots and berries.
house plants
dumb cane (dieffenbachia) - toxic protein is in all parts of the plant.
poinsettia (euphorbia pulcherrima) - milky sap in the steam.
hyacinth (Hyacinthus) - the toxins are in the bulb.
castor oil plant (ricinus communis) phototoxic is in the seeds.
mistletoe (viscum album) - amines are in the berries.
So there you are the “hidden danger” But I don’t really say that you have to go and dig your garden up and get rid of them. Just make sure what you got in it and if there are any poisonous berries (they are the biggest danger) just pick them up and throw it away. And when you are buying any plants from the shop always read the label and if you are not sure ask for assistance.

Over 100 common garden plants have been identified as capable of causing serious harm to you children or pets. Poor labelling of plants, shrubs and trees in many nurseries and garden centres does nothing to help the novice gardener looking to make a purchase to brighten up the family garden.
It is important that any ... ...able to breakdown and eliminate poisonous substances.
Just a quick glance around my own garden has brought to light a few very attractive but deadly specimens which I am now having to deal with, as my daughter is coming close to toddler stage. I have a large golden Yew on my rockery which every year produces some very bright, but highly poisonous red berries. There are literally thousands of plants available to gardeners nowadays. It's estimated that only about a hundred or so of these may cause some harm and fewer than half of those have been shown to be seriously ... ...ways to the effects of poisonous plants. In some, even a small amount of the toxin can cause severe symptoms whilst in others it may only cause mild stomach pain etc. Obviously children and pets are far more vulnerable due to their lesser body weight. From an early age try to teach children never to pick or eat berries, leaves etc from the garden. Small children at the crawling or toddler stage should always be supervised . Be very cautious also ...

Tidying up the garden I notice some foxglove plants. These plants are e at the back of my border.
The name although in my childhood I thought it meant foxes gloves really means folks gloves , fairy folk were said to use the foxglove bell shaped flower as a glove. The Latin name is digitalis the flower a finger like shape. A fox glove flower does fit on a finger well, just the like a thimble. Again as a child I would pit my finger into a fox's glove.
I expect a lot of you will have heard of digitalis a drug for heart complaints, yes this drug comes from the foxglove. This means the foxglove is a poisonousplant all parts of the plant are toxic if eaten. So maybe not a good plant for a child friendly garden.
However fox gloves are easy to grow from seed, they self set everywhere. If you wish you can buy plants easily ...

this is a problem to American oaks but I do not think it is in England ?.. Yet. The leaves of this plant are poisonous to animals so no animals feed on this plant however insects such as bees visit the rhododendron flowers. But they do not use the leaves as a food plant it will provide cover for birds too.
Although magnificent this plant is as a nuisance it is very invasive. This plant can be found in woodlands where it has escaped from parks and country gardens.
Rhododendron ponticum can reproduce by seed, or by roots growing on branches that reach the soil.
There is very little to kill this plant so looks like it is here to stay. The rhododendron just needs good management to stop it spreading in our countryside.
I believe it is only the rhododendron ponticum that is so poisonous and gives so many problems.

The Christmas rose is a native of central and southern Europe. It is fairly easy to grow in the garden.
