Before I begin please note I have added a brief introduction for those who are new to the Pokemon world. Those who are familiar with previous Pokemon games can skip the history lesson and go straight to the review if they wish.
Introduction - The begining......
"Pokemon" (translated into english as "Pocket Monsters"), are creatures which look very much like mutated animals. In this fantasy world, Pokemon and humans live together in harmony. Some people play with pokemon, whilst some people, called trainers, train them to be stronger by fighting with other pokemon. At first this cartoon anime started off as a TV show, but after a surge in popularity worldwide Nintendo; a major game developer made two games for it's handheld game console, the Nintendo Gameboy. These were called Pokemon Blue and Red and like in the TV show the plot is similar, a young 10 year old boy begins his journey to become the "Pokemon Master" of the world, and on his way has many exciting adventures. The games were the biggest success Nintendo ever had since it first created Mario. Following this success Nintendo released 3 further games, Pokemon Yellow, Silver and Gold. Pokemon Silver and Gold introduced an additional 100 pokemon that needed to be caught, which expanded the length of the game and meant more variation when two players fought their prized pokemon against each other. And now after a decade Nintendo has released yet another series of Pokemon games..........
Main Review
Pokemon Leaf Green and Fire Red are remakes of the very first Pokemon games (Blue and Red). For the veteran players of the Pokemon Blue & Red age, you will notice the HUGE change just as soon as you switch your gameboy advance console on. I have listed a few of the changes below without giving too much away and spoiling the story in case you do decide to purchase, rent or even borrow this game and never give it back again (as it is truly addictive).
- The game is in colour unlike the originals. - There are now over 300 pokemon to catch, unlike before when there were only 151 pokemon to capture. - There are new items available to aid you on your quest, such as running shoes to help give you a lil speed boost. - There are additional side quests that have been added to the original quest. - There are now several new islands to be explored. - Some of the new Pokemon are now available too. - The graphics have drastically improved.
Thanks to these additional changes the game now is longer, more challenging and even veterans will still find this game interesting as there are a good number of new features to keep them entertained. Although the game was designed for children, many older teenagers and adults also play the game. It is a great value for money as gameboy games are usually reasonably cheap, and this game has months worth of gameplay hours in it. However this game has one drawback. Like with any RPG the game involves a lot of training which can prove to be repetitive and gradually the player can lose interest. Even though this may be off putting, overall this is a great game and is perfect for on the go. Personally I usually play it to make the many bus and train journeys I make every week slip by faster. So give it a try, Pokemon games are normally very cheap, and if they are not to your tastes can always be resold as they are in high demand even after 2 years of their release date. But in my opinion I would give this game a 94% rating as it has yet to dissapoint or bore me.
