Lee and Ben started collecting cards a couple of years ago. They started buying the odd pack with their pocket money, but soon the call came for me to top them up with my hard earned cash because 'so and so' had more cards etc.
To start with this was a phase like any other. They bought a few, traded a few, got completely stitched up by 'Those in the the know' and generally made a mess of it. I decided to step in when Lee swapped a 'holographic' card for a more common one, he thought he had done a good deal because his so called friend had told him so. At this point I could see they were a little bit more collectable than I had first thought.
And so 'Poke-mum' was born. Every card we bought was kept inside a plastic sleeve, inside a hardbacked folder. These were not to be played with and bent up like all the other kid's cards, NO, this was no longer a game.
As we began to complete the sets, I scoured the internet auctions for the missing ones, much easier and cheaper than buying pack after pack. We soon had half a dozen complete sets.
For those of you who have read this far and are thinking "what is she going on about?", a quick review.
Pokemon Trading Crads are collectable cards that come in various sets, some of these are Base Set 1, Base 2, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Neo, and Neo 2. All of these cards have a number and a symbol on them denoting which set they come from and the number of cards per set. Every set is made up of three groups of cards, Common, Uncommon and Rare. There are also Rare-Holographic cards in each set. The cards come in mixed packets which are usually made up of mainly common, a few Uncommon, and maybe 2 or 3 rare cards, one of which may also be Holograpic.
There are also various other 'special' cards you can collect, for example, the Blackstar Promo cards. These do not come as a set, they are released now and again and you could (in theory) collect these forever. They don't come in packets, you will find them in various places, such as being handed out at the movies or in gameboy and Nintendo packages. Obviously this makes them far harder to get hold of.
You can also buy limited edition sets, such as the 'Pikachu World Collection' set. These were made and distibuted throughout the Sydney Olympics, again these sets are harder to get hold of.
Then there are the real collectors cards, 'Happy Birthday Pikachu' and 'Ancient Mew' are just 2 of them, these are Ultra rare and can cost hundreds of pounds. And before you all start jumping up and down because your son/daughter has these cards, there are promo cards for both of these which are worth next to nothing!
If you decide to collect or are collecting these cards (or any other card) please keep them in plastic sleeves. The tiniest scratch will completely de-value the cards and they will be worth nothing.
So, back to 'our' collection. Over the last couple of years we have managed to accumulate all of the sets mentioned above, plus a few more. We recently had them valued and they are worth around Ł1000.00, which is probably double what we paid for them. This is because a few of the sets have now gone out of print and so are worth twice as much money. The kids don't want to sell them though, they want to hang on to them for 20 years or so, they're hoping they will be worth more and maybe they will be.
So, if your child has some of these knocking around, don't throw them out, even if they are not in sets, single cards are sold on the internet auction site all the time, and you never know there may just be a rare one in there.
Advantages: None, as a parent, but ask a child the same question! Disadvantages: Everything about Pokemon.
...What is the fascination about Pokemon and why does everyone else seem to understand this phenomena, except me! Or am I just feeling my age?
For anyone out there that hasn’t come across Pokemon - where have you been, Mars? Because that must be about the only place that this craze can’t have reached or are there little green men swapping Pokemon cards!
For the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know what Pokemon are, then I will do my ... ...my understanding is correct?).
Pokemon are a Japanese creation (who else!) and the literal translation is “Pocket Monsters”. They are cartoon characters and there must be about 150 different Pokemon, but they seem to keep adding new ones, so that figure has probably now doubled!
There is a Pokemon Trainer called Ash, who as his title says, trains and collects new Pokemon, so that he can become the greatest Pokemon Trainer. All these ...

I have been collecting Pokemon cards for a long time and I have hundreds of them. There are different types of cards; Jungle, Fossil, Rocket, Dark Rocket, Pokeball 2, Edition 1, Base Set, Gym Challenger and Gym Leader, that is 9 types in all.
Pokemon cards all have different values, some of them, rip offs. Ancient Mew, for example, is worth Ł150.00 but if you sell it you will never even get Ł100.00 for it. Some Pokemon cards like Magikarp are only ... ...you are selling or buying Pokemon cards, try to sell or buy them for the right price. To do that, there are Pokemon trading card game magazines around.
To buy Pokemon cards in the shops a Deck (60 cards) costs from Ł6.99 to Ł7.50 and a Booster pack (11 cards) costs Ł2.49 or Ł2.50. Note that Edition 1 cards don’t come in special packs, they come in normal packs by luck. They are very rare. ...

...(trainers), that go around collecting Pokemon and using them to do battle against other Pokemon Trainers. The star Pokemon is called Pikachu, and an evil duo, known as Team Rocket (Jesse and James), are out to steal him. Pokemon is also available on the Gameboy and Nintendo consoles, and many other toys have been produced and are very over-priced. The other day my son wanted a Pokemon holdall - it was Ł14.99!! My son only gets Ł2.50 a week pocket money which he can spend on whatever he wishes, and he usually buys a pack of Pokemon cards with this. I accept the fact that he is a Pokemon fan, but I do not like it, so we have made a deal. I do not want ...

Advantages: Nice toys Disadvantages: Just another parent gimmick
The Pokemon Revolution has hit our shores for about the last 18 months and are beginning to wain in popularity now slightly. THE Toy last Christmas was a Pokemon toy. The toy this Christmas is going to be the Thunderbirds puppets. Strange that as I never though it would be popular with young children, not 30 years after its initial release. The pokemon domination is helped by its TV coverage as is Thunderbirds. POkemons are meant to be small animals ... ...extremely popular. Gameboy launched a big advertising campaign using this game. I think that they are still popular but Thunderbirds are more popular at the moment. The shortage of Thunderbirds puppets at Christmas (60,000 available for 500,000 customers) may push the market share of Pokemon toys up. ...

I doubt the designers of Pokemon realised just how much power their new creations had in the beginning. In case you don't know, Pokemon are the new game & TV phenomenon from the shores of the rising sun ( Japan ). Gamers and cartoon trhoughout the world are going crazy for these 150 creatures. By July 21st Pokemon had just broken all Gameboy records by shipping 262,000 units in the first 20 days. The numbers of people attending Pokemon tournaments ... ...indoor mall event ). The Pokemon brand ( including games, merchandise, tv shows & films ) is now valued at over $5 billion worldwide. Going on highly dubious maths, this means that Pikachu ( see picture ) is now worth just over $33.3 million! Richard Branson would be jealous. . . Youg people all over the world are embracing this craze, which has swept almost unbelieveably quickly in recent times. Sources say that the Pokemon craze has easily overshadowed ...

Advantages: Loads of fun for Pokemon/Nintendo fans Disadvantages: Can be boring for parents
It is no use denying it, Love them or hate them, Pokemon Trading cards are big! They have played a big part in our life this year, we have been to no less than six Trading Card League events. I have to praise these events because for Pokemon fans they are a real treat. The events are free to enter and the first thing you get is a bag of goodies just for going in. This bag contains a collectable card which is not readily available elsewhere. Once inside the kids can play card games with other players winning points on a card. Once they have enough points they get to play one of the more expert gym leaders and earn their badges. If they get fed up of playing cards then they can play on many of the nintendo systems set up, usually featuring brand new games. There is also a chance to enter competitions to find the best game player. Often ...

Advantages: Good strategy game for all the family & a good collection hobby Disadvantages: Cost; exploitation in card swaps; and value of the the cards
Although the initial hysteria has died down, Pokemon is still here! If you aren't already aware; Its Japanese; it stands for 'Pocket Monsters' and its actually been around for about 7 years. This opinion gives you a detailed background in Pokemon, a brief description of the game and the problems/advantages of collecting the Pokemon cards. Even if you hate the concept of Pokemon it maybe worth reading!
The object of the Pokemon game is to compete or fight against your opponent using your pocket monsters against theirs. The winner is obviously the Pokemon champion. Each pocket monster or Pokemon has special skills eg. Pikachu has a lightening bolt of a strength of 40 Hit Points against its opposing Pokemon. Each Pokemon are split into different categories - fire, earth, lightening, water, psychic etc. Some are better than others ...

Advantages: Highly customisable, promotes social interaction,, popular (for the moment) with the children Disadvantages: Prices in the West are ridiculous. Some cards no longer available. Odds of getting premium cards too high.
The Pokemon Trading Card Game has been available in the UK for just under a year now, and about 18 months in the US. Yet it seems that the game is now in a decline. So I put the question to you - is it actually worth bothering with this franchise anymore?
Consider the following factors:
1) Cost. I will not pull punches here. Wizards Of The Coast made this game a rip off in the West. In Japan, a booster pack (where you get new cards in a pack for $3 or Ł2.50) will always contain a "holohgraphic" card, which are regarded as the best. In the West however you only get on per three packs, so as you might work out, collecting a whole set is difficult. The demand for the "charizard" card amongst others has caused many scandalous news reports in schools and so forth. In order to create a "killer deck" you usually have to have more money ...
