I know Digital cameras have moved on quite a bit and to say I have had a few might be an understatement but as well as telling you about the good, I also feel I should tell you about the bad.
So Im going to turn the clocks back to 4 years ago to mention the cheap and not so cheerful offering from Polaroid. The PDC 4350.
REASONS I PURCHASED I bought the camera (or rather my mum did) because I needed a camera that could do the following: Store images on SD cards to fit in the card reader in my laptop at the time. Have at least 4 Megapixels (as anything less looked very grainy) An optical zoom lense. A colour preview screen.
So after scouring the various high street shops and other outlets, I found Argos offering this camera at nearly half price. £169.99 to £89.99 With this bargain in mind and seeing that it met my minimum requirements, I snapped it up without looking to carefully at many other features. Many of which have lead to shortcomings in its performance.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE Well, the picture here on ciao is incorrect (see my pictures). It is very block like and bulky. It looks more like a large brick instead of the slimline cameras of today. The Colour LCD screen on the rear is very small (1.8 Inch) which has a large black shiny bezel to make it look bigger than it really is. The screen can be used to preview pictures as well as doubling up as the viewfinder. There is also a separate viewfinder for those that prefer the old fashioned method of snapping. The button layout is quite good with good spacing for large clumsy fingers. However thats where its good points seem to dry up.
HOW IT PERFORMS Well the optical zoom takes your pictures up to 3 times its normal size which is not all that clever compared to modern cameras. Once you get past this level and move on to digital zoom the pictures seemto become very blurry and grainy. The pictures themselves are not too clear even on optical or no zoom. Being only 4 Megapixels seems to lack in clarity and depth of colour.
Reviewing pictures is particularly easy with a flick of a switch taking it from taking to pictures to reviewing. You can see what you have seen on the little screen but again this is not very clear and detail suffers. Options for editing seem to be limited to delete or keep!
BATTERY LIFE Possibly the worst element of this camera. It literally takes 6 pictures with a flash and that is the end of 2 AA Duracell batteries. Taking pictures like that would cost you a fortune. This soon lead my to shelving the camera in favour of something that could be recharged. Even reviewing pics on the small screen was a big battery drain. There is a socket for external power but no adapter!
STORAGE OPTIONS 2 options although 1 is pretty limited. You have 16MB on camera storage with limits you to about the same number of average pictures. The SD slot in the battery compartment allows you to boost this up by adding a 1Gb card. However, it is unable to recognise my 2Gb cards. Very poor.
CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS You can easily hook the camera up to a PC via the Mini USB B lead included in the box or connecting to a TV via the TV out connection for easy reviewing. Most cameras today have this function.
DRIVERS/SOFTWARE You do get a handy CD rom with this camera with has all drivers for connecting the camera to a PC as well as a basic editing suite for touching up your pictures.
OVERALL A very poor offering from one of the recognised camera manufacturers in the world today. While it does take an easy picture, it has poor battery life, a poor quality image and a tiny display screen. Obviously this was a major reason it was offered so cheap. Even 2nd hand, avoid like the plague!
