Now, I am a digital camera virgin, so please forgive my simple terms, but they may be of benefit to other new digital users! I have just got this camera about four hours ago, so this review may be added to quite a bit over time. It cost me £89.99, from Argos. Features: 5.3 Mega Pixel 1.5" colour TFT-LCD display 32MB Internal Flash Memory 4X Digital Zoom SD Memory-Card Compatible Auto-Flash with Red-Eye Reduction
As I mentioned, I have never used a digital camera without supervision before, now, I am only 22, and I have a City & Guilds in Computing and Desk Top Publishing, but have you seen some of these cameras, with like, 85 buttons, and 5 different menu screens! This camera is a pleasure to use, and oh so easy, and it only has 11 buttons! Included in the box: PDC 5055
Digital Camera CD-Rom Software 2AA Batteries USB Cable Pouch/Case Camera Strap (small, to fit over wrist)
Note: No SD Memory card, it is compatible, but this is to be purchased later, if desired. When I got the case out of the box, the buttons on the back looked quite cheap, they are those really shiny plastic silver buttons, that look like it may peel at any minute, these particular ones probably wouldn't, but they do look a bit cheap. The rest of the camera looks fine, top notch. It's quite light weight, not feather-like, but enough not to be a burden whilst out and about.
This is a really easy camera to use, I taught my Mom, who is Technologically-Challenged, (it's not her fault, it's her age, apparently. I don't accept her lame 'I'm too old' excuses!), to use this device, the basics, in about 15 minutes, and my Mom is really hard to teach anything, let alone technology. So, you could maybe imagine how really easy it must be. The only boggle I have developed with this camera so far, is that the images on the screen are quite dark, it does have a brilliant flash, which is really powerful, but if you can't see what you're going to be taking a picture of, the lighthouse-strength flash is rendered kind of redundant! It is brilliant in day light, but in your lounge in the early evening, not so hot! Especially if you don't see very well to start with, for example, again, my Mom, with her milk-bottle reading glasses!
It features an auto-flash, which is not very strong, and doesn't really differ that much from no flash, and a red-eye reduction mode. It also features still and video modes.
I downloaded the software, and it is very easy to upload my pictures, no problems there. But, with the image editing software that comes with this camera, as an ex-design student, I was not that impressed. I use Picture-It and various other art/photo programs quite regularly, and this one is rather sparse on features. It states on the box, that you can 'create brochures, newsletters, invitations, greeting cards', I had a bit of a play, and all I have the option to create is a calendar with only 6 background choices, or a photo album, which I would expect is standard for camera software. So, I'm assuming that once again, like the many times I have been caught this way before, these are features that can be bought seperately and added on to this package. Which is fine, but, the package that it comes with is not really worth using, and I would rather use my HP software, or one of my art programs. I cannot wait to get an SD memory card for this camera, because I have a HP PhotoSmart printer, and I won't even need to turn my computer on, which will be so much easier, for all concerned, (especially my Mom!)
Specifications: 5.3 Megapixel CCD 2592 x 1956 pixel resolution 4X digital zoom 32MB internal flash memory (16MB SD RAM) 1.5" colour TFT-LCD display USB Cable JPEG compression SD memory card compatible Off, Auto, Red-Eye reduction and Fill Flash. Auto or Manual exposure Movie clip with sound. Please let me know if I have missed anything out that you may want to know, but I have only starting playing with it today, so this review, as I said, will probably be amended on a weekly basis for the next few months!
21.07.2005 - UPDATE Well, the camera was so easy to use, I ended up giving it to my Mom!! But, I did like it so much that I went and got myself the same one again! Well, the only snag I've found so far is that until you buy a memory card, the camera itself only holds about 26 pictures. So I highly recommend buying a memory card at the same time as buying your camera, unless you're up for downloading, saving and/or printing off your pictures every 26 shots, not good! The cost of memory cards ranges from approx. £20 up to £80 plus, depending on how many photos you intend to store on your camera. But, all in all, still going good, no plans to change it so far!!
