Launched in 1948, it seems as though Polo Mints have adorned our shops, sitting pretty by the tills or next to the newspapers for years and years. We have all grown up with them, munching and crunching, sucking and smacking.
- Did you know that thirty-eight million Polo's are produced every day!
I bought a packet this morning and was surprised to see they were twenty-five pence. Eee, I remember when they were six pence! Now owned by the Nestle organisation they come in their easy spotted packaging of green and blue with green and white lettering.
- Did you know that Polo's name is derived from the word 'Polar', meaning coolness?
They are made up of sugar, glucose syrup, starch, and mints oils, and I was surprised to see Polo Mints don’t have an actual web site – unless I missed it.
I expected a whole foundation of Polo Mint fans and even a Polo Mint Trust (however, having said that the initials for such a trust might be off putting…) But I did expect more – perhaps some of you might be able to help me with info about this holey mint?
- Did you know that one hundred and forty-seven Polo's are eaten every second? 19.5% of these are spearmint.
You get about 20 mints in a packet and they taste quite nice as mints go. They are not too strong, like Extra Strong Mints, but they can get stuck in your teeth. They are refreshing and nice to suck, especially after a night out when you are feeling rough!
Obviously there have been other ranges of Polos, including fruit Polos, sugar free Polos and even butterscotch Polos. But I’m talking mints, so don’t go telling me that!
- And did you know it takes the weight of two elephants to press a Polo mint? - Oh, and these are the only sweets that get ‘bigger’ as you grow up…
