The ritual of parents buying their sons and daughters gifts for achieving feats such as the passing of exams ceased to fail this year with me being bombarded with gifts from the moment I read out my results. One of these gifts included a Ralph Lauren Polo Sport Water Basics set (phew!). General Packaging: The Polo Sport Water Basics range arrives in a simplistic style which comprises of a white bottle/tube with the distinctive blue cap. The Eau de Toilette is slightly different with the bottle being a transparent blue and the cap a chrome finish. The Ralph Lauren logo is displayed on each bottle/tube (an American flag with the stars being replaced with the letters RL) to the top left, with the Ralph Lauren name to the right. Also displayed on the front of the packaging is the contents of the bottle/tube with the quantity also. The reverse of the bottles/tubes gives information on the location of the company.

Close Shave Foam: The foam is dispensed through a normal cap (as found on most shaving foam cans), and squirts very evenly in a fancy rectangular fashion. It is a thick foam, unlike the watery cheap stuff from most supermarkets own makes. The scent is unlike that of normal shaving foam, the Polo Sport foam holds the scent of its Eau de Toilette big brother very well without being too ‘clean’. Application is easy, and removal is quick leaving a smooth finish.

Post Shave Relief Balm: Applied after a shave (with Polo Sport Close Shave Foam presumably) it is said to sooth the skin which can become irritated after a shave. It does just that. However, it doesn’t seem to hold the scent as well as the foam, and hides a slight moisturiser type smell. Saying that it contains moisturiser to sooth. Can’t have everything then! The oily substance makes sure your skin is loveably soft to the human touch afterwards, which can’t be bad.

Shower Wash: One point I noticed as soon as I used this product was how thick it was. Application therefore is slightly more strenuous and thicker gel means less in the tube. The 50ml tube has lasted me about two weeks at one shower a day, not economical then! That said, it lathers well and does hold the smell of the shave foam too.

SMELL

The name gives the buyer a rough idea on the smell to start. And no, I don’t mean it smells like Polo mints. I mean it holds a sporty scent. It has a clean fresh smell and is very masculine. It makes a great all day Eau de Toilette but can also be easily used for those nights out with the other half. It might suggest you want to play some sport later on but hey isn’t that what Eau de Toilette is meant to do? ;)

PRICE

My parents bought the set as a deal. A good deal at that. Alders were selling the Eau de Toilette for £32 and you get the Close Shave Foam, Post Shave Balm and Shower Wash all free with it. Separately, we were told they would fetch around nearly £50.

WHO WOULD I BUY IT FOR?

A lot of teenage men currently use these products after a mini survey I carried out at my school. I know men aged around 30 who also use this product in the showers after our cricket matches. Therefore I would say the age group it is most appreciated is 16-30. This could be disputed as the masculine scent can also attract the older generation.
