Before our stripping cleansers, our superfluous toners, our comodogenic moisturisers, our crackling facial masks, our harsh exfoliants, there was. . . . . .Ponds Cold Cream. This cream has been around since 1918.
My first experiences with the Ponds brand were as a little girl watching television commericals. I remember one had big white swinging French doors. They would open, and you would see lots of dark-haired beautiful women walking around in what (to me) looked like a ballroom. In the middle of a ballroom there was a large fountain. An announcer would say something about the "International Ponds Institute", and the commercial would close with something like: "Ponds - Since 1846". I remember enjoying these commercials and finding them glamorous and intriguing.
I first got really interested in skin and hair products about a year and a half ago, but makeup didn't come until sometime later. Now wearing a full face of mascara, concealer, foundation, two different kinds of powder, and a lip moisturiser, I needed a product that would gently cleanse my face while leaving my pores free of potentially pore-clogging makeup. But most "traditonal" cleansers I tried didn't seem to work. They either foamed up too much and sucked all the moisture out of my skin or left my face with traces of makeup still on it. That's when I thought of the Ponds brand and those commercials from my youth. I knew Ponds was most famous for it's original cold cream, which claimed to remove makeup and not clog pores.
I bought my first jar of Ponds Cold Cream at the local drugstore *cough* chemist's for around 10 $ -- about 4.50 Great Britain Pounds. To me, for a chemist's product, this is a tad expensive. But, the jar is big so it should last for awhile.
The jar is 190 mL and almost heart-shaped with a pale green lid. Both the jar and the lid are plastic. The jar loudly declares itself to be "POND'S Cold Cream Deep Cleanser" on the front. The packaging isn't really that exciting and I probably would not notice it if it weren't at an appropriate place on the store shelf.
The jar is filled with the cleanser, which is pale white cream. To me though, it doesn't smell very nice. It doesn't smell bad either though. It is a chemical-y scent. A good thing though is that the fragrance is not overpowering or noxious.
To use the product, you spread the cleanser over your face and throat. You can tissue it off or wipe with a warm washcloth.
The cleanser is very soothing and in texture it is a thick liquid. It is very easy to use and to remove. It does remove makeup effectively but once I was finished with it my face felt (and looked) a bit greasy. However, this was easily solved with a bit of toner poured on a cotton pad and rubbed over my face. Afterwards, my face was soft and clean and not greasy at all.
Would I buy Ponds again? Probably. It does remove all my makeup, including mascara (and it doesn't sting!). It moisturises my face well and hasn't broken me out.I would be hesitant to buy it in the summer though, when my skin tends to be a bit more oily.
