I first heard of this cream several years ago, before I started using a moisturiser. However, at the tender age of thirteen decided I was 'ready' to begin my beauty regime, starting with skin care.
My grandmother used to give me tubs of her old make up and face creams as a child to play with, and when she heard I was starting to use them properly, she recommended I use Ponds Light Day Cream, which she herself had used for a long time. I wish I had taken her advice sooner; she has incredibly young skin, considering her age, and has always been one of these (wise) women who stick to a trusted product. However, when I went into Superdrug and saw the packaging I decided it wasn't the cream for me (terribly shallow, but kids will be kids!). As it happens, I've come to really like the simple, classic packaging. It is quite ladylike and comes in a white and peach box. The cream itself is in a glass jar with a plastic screw-off lid; quite old fashined as most creams now are in squeezy tubes where a third of the product is lost because you can never get out the last remains. The logo on the front is the word Pond's and has a simpe tulip on the front. It has no radical claims of 'better skin in three days' or 'will transform your skin'. It simply says on the back of the jar "Refreshing and light for long lasting moisturisation". It has directions for use and ingredients on the box.
After many years of trying what must be one hundred different face moisturisers, I came across this one in a Lloyds pharmacy. I needed a new cream and seeing as I had tried so many other 'exiting' creams, packed with false promises, I decided to try the one I had rejected all those years ago as a foolish youth.
The actual cream smells lovely. Slightly perfumed and of nothing in particular the scent is rich and comforting. The cream is white and thicker than I expected, considering it is a light day cream. I was concerned that my combination skin would become too greasy and have a breakout, but tried it anyway and was pleasantly suprised. It is rich without being heavy, thick without being greasy, dense without leaving a residue. It absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling beautifully soft and gentle. I think it would be fine to use for sensitive skins, though very dry skin may need a more heavy duty solution (Pond's do a cream for that too, though!).
After using this cream for several months now, I can't believe I didn't give it a try sooner. My skin is in very good condition and my husband alway comments on how soft and supple it is. It has also benefited my neck and decolletage, leaving those areas soft and smooth. I am suprised at how effective such a simple product has been, and how ironic it is that the cream I shunned for not being exciting enough has far surpassed all of the other 'exciting' creams I tried in its place, but were in the end so disappointing.
Another bonus with this is that it has a sun protection factor of 6 (SPF 6) and contains UVA and UVB sun filters, which is great for use in winter or on overcast days when, if you're like me, you convince yourself you don't need to apply an SPF, even though you do.
The price is also impressive: for a 75ml jar it costs £3.99, though I was lucky and got it for £2.99 in a promotion. You only need to apply a small amount, as a little cream goes a long way.
I can not really think of a true disadvantage, only that it is so understated that people overlook it in the shops.
My grandmother was right, and it's good to know that if I keep using this cream like she did I will look as good as her when I'm almost 80 years old! I highly recommend this product.
Advantages: Light easily absorbed cream Disadvantages: May not be creamy enough for really dry skin
Ponds Day Cream
As far as moisturizer is concerned it's another product to which I have absolutely no brand loyalty; I must have incredibly tough skin because nothing seems to irritate it!
So, I decided to try this one out because I needed moisturizer, and it was "there".
PRODUCT AND PACKAGING
The cream comes in a tub with a screw on/off lid, which I like as I can get to the last bits of cream.
The cream itself is a white, lightly perfumed cream ... ...by the skin. It appears to be non greasy; I say this because I am not left with a layer of cream on my face, but rather, the cream rub easily into my skin without a trace.
A real plus is that the cream is SPF6 and includes UVA and UVB filters, so it does provide some sun protection, although I wouldn't advocate using it as your normal sun protection. It's reassuring though, for days when the sun suddenly appears, and you realize you don't want to ...
