Water is one of the things that seem to attract children whether it be splashing in puddles or playing in the pool in the garden.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN UNATTENDED WHILE PLAYING IN A POOL
Well I expect a lot of readers will also have been playing in the garden with their paddling pools this weekend great fun on a hot summers day. Water is one of the things that seem to attract children whether it be splashing in puddles or playing in the pool in the garden.
“ Splishy splashy” are the words Adrian has recently learnt from his grandfather (aaagggggh I am married to a granddad) has taught when taking a stick and splishy splashing in our garden pond
I have bought a plastic shell shaped sand and water pit from Argos this is two pools that nest inside each other cost 11 in sale now 15 out of sale. I only just wrote about these pools and the sand play we filled it with water for water play too. There are many water pools about and I have used many different ones I will tell you of a few and the benefits of water play.
The ElC have one of the cheapest pools for 5 pounds you can buy a wave pool diameter 114cm depth 23cm. big enough for 1 or two children this is a blue inflatable pool with wave shaped top. I think this pool suitable for a garden for small children to play in. It is not very big only for 1 or 2 tots. Like a lot of the inflatable pools I think it would puncture if you place it on any sharp items or if toddler should bite /chew it. Punctures can be successfully mended with puncture repair kits. I think for cheap water play this pool would be fine. You could always use the pool for other soft sensory play mediums i.e. soft balls.
ElC has several pools all fairly cheap some like the inflatable castle pool at £15 have a sun canopy I think this is a good idea to protect your child’s skin.
There is also a family sized inflatable cost £40 sized 254 cm x 175 depth 66cm from the E L C.
The Early Learning Centre has a foot pump available for inflating these pools.
A sturdier pool with rigid frames and a plastic liner is I think is more durable I have used these at playschools. Also plastic pools a bit more solid than the cheap shell one are available too we have a turtle sand /water pool at school I have seen ones shaped like ladybirds butterflies and frogs I would recommend them for playgroup /nursery situation or for home the one I bought is fine but the plastic is not as strong
These have a steel rectangular frame with legs at the corners and mid way along the lengths. The frames fit into sleeves along the edges of the thick plastic liner and the legs are fitted at the corners and midway along the length. These pools are stable and do not puncture as easily as the inflatable styles however the liners do occasionally get torn but can be mended with waterproof tape. I have noticed John Lewis sell one 250cm x 196cm x 50cm deep for 59 pounds.
REMEMBER NEVER LEAVE YOUR YOUNG CHILDREN UNATTENDED IN THE POOL.
Now lets explore water play Water is something all children are attracted to play with splashing in puddles throwing sticks stones into brooks and streams. I know as a child I spent a long time playing in the brook that ran near my house and made damns and bridges. A paddling pool in the garden is a great way to provide this fun where you can see what your children are doing. After last weekends sun I think a lot of shops sold out of paddling pools. A paddling pool cannot be just a place for play but a place for learning too. (Just don’t tell your children)
Put lots of containers in the pool for your young children to play with large containers small containers funnels colanders sieves old washing up bottles or water pistols for squirting. Playing with these will teach the children mathematical concepts full empty, heavy light shallow deep. As you watch your children play you can use these words saying such things as “that’s heavy now its full” or “pass me the empty tub” Thus enhancing their language. You could put things in the pool that float things that sink.
Introduce small play fishing net and go fishing for items in the pool. This will help them practice their eye hand coordination Children can have fun before making boats out of old tubs and sailing them
Science can be explorered in the pool too use a few sponges they will absorb water and the children can squeeze the water out if you put ice cubes in the pool they will melt. How far can they squirt the water with a washing up liquid bottle ohhhhh a long way that hit Dad at the bottom of the garden.
You could freeze coloured water and put the ice cubes in the water and watch the ice melt and the colour disperse that is great on a really hot day. Children squealing with delight as they get an ice-cold ice cube. You do not have to restrict the paddling pool to plain water use some bubble bath ohh paddling in bubbles is great
Children will learn social skills as they play along side others in a paddling pool. Learning how to get on with others is important.
Although this review is really about paddling pools remember it is fun play for children to play washing dolls clothes or washing toy cars or even washing real cars is great fun for kids too, get out with the hosepipes and water the next sunny hot weekend.
IMPORTANT REMEMBER THE SAFETY DO NOT LEAVE YOUNG CHILDREN IN PADDLING POOLS UNSUPERVISED
Advantages: A summer of fun Disadvantages: Keeping children safe.
Its 10 o clock at night, the stars are out and big brother is the last thing on our mind, summer has arrived and we have invested in an oversized paddling pool.
Both our children have birthdays within two weeks of Christmas, so because of this they have token presents on their birthday and we treat them in the Summer, as otherwise they don’t get Summer toys. This year we have bought a 12ft round 30” high pool, with filter, heater, solar cover, net, ... ...for £300 and the steps extra at £50. You can get the pool separately with steps, but no heater or solar cover for £225 from Argos, ebay also had some good deals on the stand alone pools if you were quick.
It arrived in 7 large boxes – the poor delivery man was exhausted when he brought them all round the back for us. In a fit of excitement we tore open the first box, lay down a piece of tarpaulin that we had bought to put under it (£10 from a camping ...

Advantages: great fun for all the family Disadvantages: takes time to inflate and put away
Every summer without fail there is someone who is getting all the sun. Some of us have a glimpse of what summer should be and when we do what else is there but to go digging through your shed or garage and find that paddling pool. Hands up those who packed it away properly so you could just get it out and blow it up!!! Well in our house, first you have to guess where you last saw it, and then battle your way through all the stuff that has accumulated ... ...of retrieving it, there is a sigh of relief when you see that the pump to blow it up with is near by. We then find a place in our garden that is relatively flat and remove all objects that seem to have mysteriously appeared since this morning. Once it has been laid out, pump is attached and the pool starts to take shape. Pretty easy stuff considering it will probably only be there for a day or two. Like most people we have gone through the stages ...

Advantages: Great big pool for a party or BBQ, good value for price Disadvantages: Takes a long time to prepare and then put away
When we bought our new house one of the specifications was a large garden and a large garden was what we got. We decided that now we had a large garden we needed a large Paddling pool to go in it on sunny days.
Of course most people would get one which was easy to blow up and take down and wouldn't be a hassle to empty. Well not us. We spotted this massive red and yellow one which came with a palm tree that sprayed water if you have the right connections, ... ...with balls. There was also a small square part which could just be sat in. It was a bargain at £14.99.
This pool is roughly 6ft by 4ft, and took up a large part of the garden. Being the rectangle shape, it fitted in ok, but was much bigger than I had imagined. It has the slide at one side. It faces the palm tree, so on a hot day it would be excellent to have the palm tree spraying water as the child goes down the slide. Well that's if you get the ...

Advantages: robust, bright design, cheap at the moment, huge potential for fun Disadvantages: takes ages to empty
Whilst baking in the sun yesterday afternoon, listening to the gentle fall of the waterfall in the pond, I had the sudden urge to dip my feet in and have a splash about. Not only would the fish have resented this, I don’t think it would have set too good an example to James, my three year old.
Not to be deterred out came the Argos book and we ruffled through the pages to find the padding pools. We didn’t want anything too big – last year we bough ... ...for about a week – but it took so long to empty and fill the water soon took on that ‘green’ hue that is NOT desirable.
We settled on the ‘boat pool’ a rather fun looking paddling pool in the shape – funnily enough as a boat and priced at £24.99. I reserved the paddling pool online at www.argos.co.uk and was delighted to see that it was in the half price sale at £12.49 so we set off quick smart to fetch it.
The pool comes in a small box with a ...

Advantages: Its so relaxing and keeps everyone happy Disadvantages: No foot pump, takes ages to fill
It was just far too hot one day last summer as the family and I wandered about the hot and dusty streets of Grantham.
Desperate to get home and remove all clothing, but remaining decent i was quickly losing my temper as the crowds of people slowly blocked every way for me to move down the street....it was hell....
But then...
I was somehow forced through the massive automatic door of Woolworths and swept along with a flock of teenage girls toward ... ...I supposed it was a good idea to have a quick look at the toys, after all , I did have both kids with me and wouldn't get a moments peace otherwise....and there it was....standing out from the shelf right in front of me.......I could see it now....
A HUGE GREAT BIG PADDLING POOL
This was so obviousley the answer and definatley worth every penny I was about to spend on it.
For a few pence less than £40 I had just purchased the best summer purchase ...
