Its not about good music, Its about making money

Advantages It shows how bands are manufactured and that this is what chart music is about
Disadvantages Good songs don't get into the charts but bad songs do
It is inevitable that the band 'Hearsay' from the programme popstars will go to number one with their first song 'Pure and Simple'. This won't be due to it being a really good song but due to media exposure. I think that it is sad that the pop charts today are ruled by really bad bands with really bad songs which are only successful because they have big record companies (who are only out to make a quick buck) promoting them and constantly pushing their music (if you can call it that)under our noses so that we can't help but listen to it. What the hell is going on when half the bands in the charts can't sing or play instruments so they have to mime when perfoming on shows like top of the pops.
Granted, the members of 'Hearsay' can definitely sing but I can't understand why anyone would want to listen to such mediocre music when there is so much better stuff available.
The problem is that most of us don't think about the fact that there is music, other than what appears in the pop charts, out there.
The best way to hear other types of music is by purchasing sampler CD's.
These are CD's released by record companies which contain various songs from different artists on that label and these CD's often only cost as little as £5. You can find them in the various artist sections of all the different music categories at record stores. One you might want to check out is the Real World samplers (from the label owned by Peter Gabriel) which contains music from artists based all over the world such as Nitin Sawney. This sampler contains all types of music fom jazz to spanish guitar.
I also think it's bad that big record stores like HMV and Virgin Mega stores actually have the audasity to sell records for £16.99 which cost £12.99 when you buy them from your local independant record store.
So, the moral of this opinion? Support your local independant record store and seek out good music which deserves your attention so much more than that stuff in the pop charts. By doing so you will be supporting artists who actually have talent and not feeding the faces of corprate bosses who don't care about the music, just about making money.

I agree expecially when on their first day of release the hype helped the 'Popstars', to sell more records that any other artist in the first day of release, except for Candle in the wind by Elton John. And we all know the reason why that sold so many records.
You silly. I know you and you know me.Your flat mate is Wilma and im moving in soon. Its me! Mandy mooooooo! Sorry. Your view on the Popstars is very true. I personally don't like their stuff. It is all a money making scam and they won't last long. However i said that about S Club 7 and they seem to be doing pretty well for themselves...bastards. Real music deserves credit, stuff you write yourselves, stuff that makes your fingers bleed. Music that comes from the heart and the soul of the performer.
