Irvine Welsh is back to his best with Trainspotting - Part II". I was disappointed with his offering like "Filth" in which I thought he was trying the shock and wierdo style a little too much.
If you've read Trainspotting you'll know its slightly different from the film with a couple of additional characters but overall quite similiar. Porno keeps these characters but they are not in the story a great deal.
Welsh keeps up his unorthodox style by having each chapter narrated by a different character which overlaps other chapters. Very similiar to the film Jackie Brown by Quinton Tarantino but not going back in time as much.
The plot is set a couple of years in the future from where Trainspotting left off. I'm not too keen to tell you the complete story as you may not have read the book yet. But then again if you are reading a review about a book you can usually expect to hear some detail about it.
The title "Porno" doesn't appear to be relevant for the first quarter of the book which I admit was a little slow going. However, you know that Simon "Sick Boy" will have a lot to do with it. But that doesn't take a genius to work out.
Anyway. Mark Renton had done a runner to (predictably) Amsterdam and set up a night club. The book doesn't concentrate on this element too much but I was quite surprised that none of the other characters would think that this was an obvious place for a junkie with loads of cash to go. Nevermind.
Begbie is banged up. No surprise's again.
Spud hasn't overdosed yet.
Sick Boy is moving from scam to scam and ends up in good old Leith with a free boozer which he conspires to cock up.
The Scottish parts can be a little confusing but there isn't a massive amount of it in the book.
Anyway I won't tell you the conclusion or the middle bits but If you are a Welsh fan or Trainspotting fan then I highly recommend you read this.
