Thinking man's 911.

Advantages: Looks, practicality, modern feel, classic insurance, brilliant track car.
Disadvantages: Previous owners will have been poseurs so mechanics often neglected.

Porsche 924 - fantastic car for the money

Advantages: Retro, RWD, Cheap simple fun for very little money
Disadvantages: not a 911, no practical rear seating, rare to find good interior

Luxurious

Advantages: comfortable
Disadvantages: none

The 928 is a luxury performance coupe. Pretty vague, right? Well, let me elaborate. Luxury means that sitting position is very comfortable, soft, but firm sport seats. Porsche 944- the unsung hero of sports cars

Advantages: Fast, practical, bags of character, immense fun to drive, looks gorgeous, superb build quality
Disadvantages: Weird boot

I've always fancied the 944, it's got the looks (butcher than the 924, but without the gimpy headlights and ridiculous bottom of the 911), the performance, the fact that it'll go round corners fast without killing you thanks to perfect 50/50 weight distribution, front engine and rear wheel drive. So, upon finding one for sale for a mere £2800 only 10 miles away, it was with baited breath I went to meet my hero, in the form of a white 1989 2.7 Lux.. ...
...be not only a car brimming with character, fast, gutsy and bags of fun to drive, but actually remarkably practical and reliable. Enough boot space to cart the weekly Tesco's run back in, and on the reliability front it seems to compare very favourably with my friends far younger and "more sensible" purchases. Review of Porsche 944 coupé

Love my 944

Advantages: Thrill every time I drive it
Disadvantages: None

Two years ago I was fortunate to get an '85 944 in lovely condition, with 315,000 km, mostly highway. It had been wonderfully cared for by its stock broker owner, I found leather conditioner in the glove, not a speck of rust, even under-body, only summer driven. I adore driving it and actually prefer it to my newer Audi Quattro, my Toyota Supra and my wife's Prius. It hugs the country roads, has lots of pickup at 160 km/hr and just purs along effortlessly ...
...park it where I can see it often, just for the pleasure. I had to replace the water pump, with the help of an airplane mechanic it took 2 days, complicated but satisfying. I have two problems someone might have suggestions about--I get an exhaust smell in the cabin with the windows down, although I cannot find a leak and the boot is tight; and if I hit a bump at 130 km/hr plus, it comes down unevenly, which I assume means shocks.
