“Go on Dad, spoil yourself.” This was one of my daughters on the occasion of my approaching 65th birthday. I must admit that this beautiful car was one of the possessions I had always aspired to but had never somehow got around to it. My finances would not stretch to a new one and I had spotted a gleaming white model on sale for £9995 (this was way back in 1990). So, my arm was twisted, not requiring much effort, and the deed was done and I said farewell to my faithful Opel Manta GTE.
The 924 was four years old and had covered 68,000 miles, more than average, but was in excellent condition. As Porsche owners will know, the eye-catching characteristics are well known and I had to put up with several good - natured comments such as “You’re getting on a bit to be driving around in a flash car like that” and “You should be able to pull the birds with that”. Well, admittedly, it’s that sort of car and did attract admiring glances but it also attracted vandals, who tend to pick out BMW’s, Porsches and Mercedes when they are bored out of their tiny minds and decide to go on a tyre-slashing expedition. I was one of the victims, having two tyres slashed in a car park. Annoying, but something you learn to live with.
On the road, it was delight to drive, with excellent acceleration and superb road-holding. Rear-view visibility was restricted and one tended to rely on the rear-view mirrors rather than twisting round to look through the rear window when reversing. Petrol consumption, particularly in town, required frequent visits to the filling station, but on long motorway journeys was more acceptable. Suspension, as in cars of this calibre, was firm, though reasonably comfortable. One advantage of owning a Porsche, even an older second-hand model, was the tendency of drivers in front of you in the fast lane on the motorway, to pull into the middle lane when they spot you in their mirror. They didn’t do that when I had my Manta.
So for two years I was a more than satisfied owner of a 924 and my wife and I both enjoyed many miles of happy motoring. How, or with what, do you follow a Porsche? Well, surprisingly, my next choice was a three year old Nissan 200SX Turbo and believe it or not, it was superior to the 924 in nearly every way. After nine years, I am still driving it, which proves something, but that’s another story – see my report.
Advantages: Looks, Marque, availability of parts. Disadvantages: Vandals Jealousy!
...cheapest way to become a Porsche owner. These cars are described as the best designed Porsches as they have perfect 50/50 weight distribution due to the engine, gearbox and diff layout. They are powered by a 2 litre engine which is based on an Audi 100 powerhouse and drives the rear wheels.
There are many myths surrounding these cars - such as they arent real porkers and they are glorified Volkswagens - Not true. VW & Audi approached Porsche to ... ...the manufacturing rights back to Porsche who developed it into the 924. The car has many VW/Audi bits on it but this is no bad thing - an example being that porsche electric window switch is around £90 and a VW part is around £15. These costs make quite a bit of difference when fixing/ restoring the car. The cars are (usually) made from galvanised sheet steel and therefore do not rust. They are exceptionally well built with all parts mating as they ...

We've had our 924 for a little over a year now, so this seems a good time for an updated opinion (see my other opinion for more details about the car)...
Well, we've put a fair few miles of road under the tyres and basically the car is still running like a star... As you might expect there's been a few minor repairs needed, mostly wear & tear parts with the exception of the starter motor. The starter had to be reconditioned, which wasn't bad at ... ...hour, mainly due to me working in the evenings with only a small torch to illuminate the underside of the car! I'm struggling to fault the car, she's rapidly approaching 25yrs old and still looks in better condition than most 5yr old cars. On the reliability front there are times when the car will decide it doesn't want to start, usually after being sat in traffic and getting hot under the collar, but given half an hour to cool down she then starts ...

I purchased my Porsche 924 about 18 months ago and it has got to be the best car I have ever owned. If anyone has ever fancied owning a Porsche but has been put off by the costs involved, then the 924 is ideal for you. Running costs have been no higher than my old Vauxhall Cavalier and classic car insurance means lower premiums than you would expect. It may not be the fastest car in the world, but who cares? Owning an old sports car is all about ... ...sick at the thought of driving about in a boring family saloon then check out the Auto Trader or the classified section in the Porsche club magazine. Pick up a mid eighties model for around three grand (we're talking Ford Fiesta money!!) and I promise you will not be dissapointed!! ...

Advantages: Retro, RWD, Cheap simple fun for very little money Disadvantages: not a 911, no practical rear seating, rare to find good interior
...be my first car, the porsche 924 would always catch my eye. In the end i was given a first car so i didnt need to purchase one. The dream of owning a porsche would have to remain in my head untilthe summer of 2005 when i purchased a 924 from my local car auctions by chance.
Unfortunately the rings had gone on the engine of this porsche but as i already knew the market for spares for the 924 was very reachable and i knew a local garage owner who ... ...miles a week in the porsche with out it missing a beat. I have complete confidence that it will get me to my destination with cannot be said for other classics and i believe it could easily do much more work if required.
The 2ltr injected engine provides plenty of power, whilst the trans-axle transmission means that the car has great weight distribution so whether on the motorway, county roads or the city the 924 is always willing. My 924 is a 1982 ...

Advantages: Beautiful aerodynamic lines, powerful turbo engine, reliable, fast and quiet Disadvantages: A little heavy on fuel, an ideal 2 + 2 but cramped in the rear
My first experience of driving a Nissan was in Florida in 1992 when I hired a 240SX and was so impressed with its performance that I forgot the lower speed limits and found myself doing 73mph in a 55mph area!
Having paid my fine and enjoyed my holiday, I was determined to buy a similar model on my return to the UK.
Unable to afford a new car, I found a 1989 model which had done around 30,000 miles and in excellent condition. Being something of an enthusiast, I had previously owned a second hand Porsche924, but the Nissan exceeded all my expectations and in my opinion was superior in nearly every way. I paid £10,000 for the Nissan and it has been excellent value for money. It is fast and cruises smoothly and effortlessly on motorways, but in town it tends to be heavy on petrol consumption. My wife and I use it for long distance driving ...

Advantages: Price, Quality, Service. Disadvantages: Shame they only do european cars!
I posted an opinion about my Porsche924 earlier and I mentioned Eurocarparts, so I thought it only fitting to add a review of them.
I first encountered Eurocarparts almost a year ago when I started looking at buying a Porsche and someone pointed me in their direction to see what spare parts prices would be like. They company caters (as the name implies) purely for European car manufacturers, to be more precise the following makes are currently covered - Audi, BMW, Citroen, Mercedes, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Saab, Volvo and VW.
The website is top notch and easy to navigate, but beyond that is the extent of their stock range, I'm driving a 1978 car and I can find most parts readily available through these folk. But it get's much better than that, imagine walking into your local car dealership and asking for the price ...

Advantages: Cheap, easily aquireable parts fun Disadvantages: rust, poor mans sports car!
I bought a ford capri before i had even past my test. it was a 2lt laser. Inside it was very basic no electric windows or any mod-cons as to speak. There is not alot i can say about the interior its a ford and they never were very advanced. There are two seats in the back which are relatively roomey and suficiant.
The car was good fun to drive but the car i bought had a worn head so was never very past. In the end i spent more time under the bonnet that i did on the road. So after a few months i scraped it!
The capri is a good car to learn the basic with as the engine (pinto) is easy to work on and the car is very simple. Also parts are cheap and common. But in comparison to other cars that you can get for the money mr2, porsche924 to name a couple are so much better.
i can conclude that the ford capri is an icon in lots ...
