As a sixteen year old chap looking through the classifieds for possible candidates to be my first car, the porsche 924 would always catch my eye. In the end i was given a first car so i didnt need to purchase one. The dream of owning a porsche would have to remain in my head untilthe summer of 2005 when i purchased a 924 from my local car auctions by chance.
Unfortunately the rings had gone on the engine of this porsche but as i already knew the market for spares for the 924 was very reachable and i knew a local garage owner who had a donor 924 lying around and i got and engine swap for £450. As was the garage owners confidence in the 924 he incuded warranty with it. Since the engine was replaced i have not looked back. I currently do about 500 miles a week in the porsche with out it missing a beat. I have complete confidence that it will get me to my destination with cannot be said for other classics and i believe it could easily do much more work if required.
The 2ltr injected engine provides plenty of power, whilst the trans-axle transmission means that the car has great weight distribution so whether on the motorway, county roads or the city the 924 is always willing. My 924 is a 1982 with electric mirrors and windows and a removable sunroof which is great in the summer. I can achieve 35mpg quite easily which came as a pleasent surprise. Running costs of the 924 are no different to a more basic cheaper brand car. The only thing that has gone wrong since i was on the road was the alternator. I picked one up for about £30 and fitted it myself to save costs. A purchase of a haynes manual means you can complete any maintanance or work yourself, not that it will be needed at all often!!
The porsche 924 represents alot of car for the money. When purchasing a 924 i do advise to get the car checked by someone who knows what their talking about if you do not yourself as with all cars the true identity and history can easily be hidden from the untrained eye. The 924 is a very solid car and has a galvanised shell making very resiliant to rust. This is why there are still a large amout of 924's about due to the fact the majority of cars their age has long rusted away.
I was going to list the bad points to the 924 but i cant realy think of any. The biggest fault is the fact that finding a 924 with out a cracked dash is rare due to a fault in the material but this is nothiong to worry about. the inside is very spacious for two and very comfortable unfortunately the rear seats are only adequate for small children but this is the reality with most coupe cars. Due the age of the car there are no real safety feature apart from seat belts. The car though does feel very stable and handles very well but a lack of safety features is a point you might want to consider.
To conclude the 924 is a fantastic car that will be happy to please so go for it, i did and definately dont regret it.
