Advantages Advantages Fantastic practical supercar that suits the road of today

Disadvantages Disadvantages Steep Servicing and spares

Back in ’99, I was bored with my car, I had a ’95 Golf VR6, I had it for a year and a half, I put a whopping an extra 60K on the clock in that time, insurance through the roof and for what. It was an automatic fast car that is only fast car once it gets past the 40mph mark, that’s not much cop for the roads in the UK. It did ease the burden of a clutch for doing those miles, It had a trip computer that used to giggle at you, if you didn’t touch the accelerator, then you used to get 27mpg, driving it normally you would 25mpg, and if you wanted any fun then it was down to 18. I used to fill up ... more

    Advantages Advantages Motoring perfection. Flawless.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hmmm...dodgy looking people staring at you at traffic lights.

The Porsche Boxster is quite simply (in my opinion) the finest roadster available on the roads today. For those who don't know, it is a 2 door, 2 seater mid-engined convertible produced by Porsche and built in Germany (and Finland alongside the top-of-the-range Saab Viggens). Priced at c. £31,000 for the 'base' 2.7 model it is significantly less expensive (can you use the word cheap to describe a Porsche?) than the c. £60,000+ 911 but has so many of it's big brother's features. These include the kudos that comes with ownership of a Porsche, fantastic handling (really, truly sublime), sleek ... more

    Advantages Advantages Numerous

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some noise; 1 month after purchase developed white growth on hood interior (mold?); servicing is steep (well, what do you expect of a Porsche?)

I'm not going to blind you with science. I'm going to give you down to earth view of the Boxster (manual). I bought the Boxster on impulse. I was captured by: *its drop dead gorgeous good looks *brilliant handling (although I would not give it full marks StevieGuy as I have managed to oversteer it and that was after owning it for over 2 years - admittedly the road was wet but lesson learned the hard way - do not throw it into a tightish corner of a small wet country road at 45mph. Lucky no one was coming the other way.) I wanted a car with real guts Other reasons included: *no one else that I ... more

Advantages Advantages The best handling car for the money

Disadvantages Disadvantages Every man and his dog has one

Now, I don't actually own a Boxster. I understand that this probably isn't the best way to start a review of the car, but I feel it's an important disclaimer. I've driven one in what can only be considered a road-test situation, and as such, my knowledge of on-the-road costs and long-term problems is limited. What I can tell you is how it drives, what it feels like to sit behind the wheel, and my experience of driving one. The Boxster has been with us for eight years now, and Porsche has just brought out an updated model - 80% new, apparently, but you'd never know it from the outside. Many ... more

Advantages Advantages Fast, good looking, great handling, fun

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Costs, maintenance needs

I recently bought a Porsche Boxster S 3.2. It's red with black interior, ABS, Traction Control, Trip Computer, Surround sound system and the usual Boxster bits. I paid about £12K for this model, X reg, 84000 miles. Then the problems started: 1. Airbag light was on...needed new ECU costing £350 (dealer paid) 2. 2x new rear tyres...Michelin £200 each (dealer paid) 3. Emission Control light came on. Reset by Porsche £50...two days later, came on again! 4. Clutch needed replacing...£870 5. Windscreen chipped (dealer paid) 6. Front and rear CV gaiters needed replacing (dealer paid) 7. Front tyres ... more
