Purple". This is Tashi's story, a shattering account of a young African woman whose decision to go through the female initiation ceremony has terrible consequences.
Advantages: Excellent story line, poignant Disadvantages: Long, might be too heavy for some
Just as Alex Haley's "Roots" was, so AliceWalker's "The Color Purple" is another of those books which brought black authors into the mainstream in the last few decades. I remember the movie, with Oprah Winfrey playing the slightly simple girl, whose life was one of all kinds of abuse and who did not realise that what was happening to her was not the way it was supposed to be. Written in the colloquial dialect of the uneducated Southern black, it is her thoughts and reasonings behind all that is happening to her, and is written in terms of her relationship with God. There are poignant pieces of giving thanks for small pleasures, and cries for forgiveness for sins she feels she has committed. You feel for the character so much, and you find yourself urging her to stand up for herself, to run, to get away.

Advantages: Lots of mystery and suspense Disadvantages: Story lacked direction and was very confusing
?s son?s friend. He appeared everywhere and was so sinister with his knowing smile all the time; I really didn?t know what he was up to. The author shepherded us from him and only gave us brief and short snippets of information about him and both his life and his involvement with the dead boy.
The book was for me far to long. I would have preferred a more direct and indeed straightforward story or more signposts along the way. As I?m sure I missed something important in the authors writing, as I spent my time scratching my head and then re-reading the previous chapter for evidence of what I seemed to have missed, but with no joy only frustration.
I am intrigued to know what other people who have read this book think of it. As for me it was quite bizarre and I never really knew what happened at the end and more importantly why it happened ...
Advantages: Definitely could have been worse Disadvantages: Seriously made on a budget
The singer of a rock band, Cassidy, is deeply depressed and when she thinks that her boyfriend, Neal, is cheating on her, she decides that she cannot take any more and blows her brains out (literally) right in front of Neal. Devastated both by her death and the vision of her dying, Neal approaches a psychic, along with the other members of their rocck band. While they are there, the psuchic becomes possessed by Cassidy's spirit, and warns the friends that they are going to die. Cassidy then takes over the body of one of the friends and goes all out to ensure they all die painfully. Will any of them survive? And will Cassidy finally be able to rest in peace?
This is a low-budget horror, and acting is probably the area that the producer spent the least on. Cassidy is played by Kacia Brady, who manages to make depression look like she is ...
