Reviews of Potties & Toilet Training »

Should have done it sooner

Advantages: No mess to clean up afterwards.
Disadvantages: Having to supervise as they can fall down the toilet!

I started potty training my son when he was around 18months. Ideally I wanted to start earlier but prior to that we were in the middle of planning our wedding and honeymoon so I had to wait till we got back before we started properly. I got conflicting advice when I first started which didn't help. My mum was telling me to put him on the toilet straight away but my mum-in-law was telling me to use a potty. What was I to do? I ended up getting a potty ...
...duck thingy for upstairs. It was a seat which fitted over the normal standard toilet seat but had the head of a duck on the front. My son took to the potty straight away but he took a while to get used to the 'Toilet Duck' as he was scared of it. Bless him! When he did get the hang of it it was brilliant. No more cleaning up messy poo. Just a flush and it was gone. As he got older I had the problem of him firing his wee up so after a couple of months ...

Also a mobility aid for disabled kids!

Advantages: steady, secure, easy to use, hygenic,
Disadvantages: none!

My youngest son has mild cerebral palsy, so we were looking for a seat that would give him the very best security when sitting on the loo. We have a grab rail to one side of the toilet and he was finding the usual child seats too unsteady, which made him afraid to even sit on them. When we fitted this seat we were very impressed, and so was he!!! Its so easy to use and such a simple idea! More hygenic also in that you don't end up with a childs seat ...

If you are not potty about potties try this!

Advantages: no cleaning out messy potties
Disadvantages: doesn't come with a transport bag

Toilet training - it is one of those milestones that most parents dread I think. Amongst friends with children bladder and bowel movements can take up rather too much of the conversation and chances are that many parents have quite a stressful time trying to ditch the nappies. My first daughter was rather reluctant to leave her nappies behind her - sure she liked the idea of peppa pig pants, she even quite enjoyed sitting on a potty in front of c-beebies ...
...This is why we bought one of these seats. Now taking aside the fact of my child being quite a late starter on the toilet front, I have to say this is an excellent product. If you have ever cleaned out a potty you will know it is not a very nice experience at all - worse than nappies for me - and this seat enables you to use your existing toilet to train. At £19.99 it is not a cheap item - I bought mine from John Lewis. You could probably buy a seat ...

Rub a dub dub! M&P Acqua Ergo Bath

Advantages: Safer than other baths.
Disadvantages: Can be restrictive.

...I finally decided on the Mamas & Papas Acqua Ergo bath, which is shaped to provide two integral support positions for both newborns and sitting babies. Described by M&P as ‘An innovative and ergonomically designed bath which will accommodate your growing baby’. I felt this would be much easier & safer, especially with a slippery newborn! Also, the bath has won 2 awards (Practical Parenting magazine Best Buy & Pregnancy & Birth magazine Editor’s Choice ...
...the bath features a gently sloping back with side supports & a raised support which sits between the legs. This keeps newborns nice & safe, but the downside I found was that it was hard to wash baby’s bottom with the support being in the way. The other end of the bath features a chunkier support between baby’s legs, & a straighter back so that they can sit upright. My son is still not able to sit unaided, so I’m still bathing him at the ‘newborn ...
